Question for you all - when putting together a flowering garden in a basket - either seasonal mums or indoor bloomers - do you take the plants out of the containers they come in or do you put the plants, plastic container and all, in the baskets and then hide the tops of the container with moss?

The latter with the exception of african violets which we leave in the pots and caution the customer to remove african violets when watering the basket and water the AV wi warm(not hot) water allowing the plant to take up water from the bottom of the pot.

Depends on the plant and the use....for funerals I usually go with european basket, leave in pots and cover with moss, that way family can break apart and each get one....for out door containers always plant into container and out of pots...

I do it both ways too. Just depends on the ocassion, and what type of plants they are. If I leave the plastic pots on the plants, and just cover with moss, I always attach a card telling the person recieving the flowers that it can be taken apart, and if not, to make sure that each plant gets water.

If I pot them up in a ceramic container, I take them out of the pots, but I put stones for drainage at the bottom of the ceramic container.
If there going in a lined basket, I prefer to leave them in the pots and cover with green sheet moss.

We call these planted baskets /containers in the UK. We plant up unless it is something like hyacinth in troughs, then we cover with coloured aggregate or moss or sisal. Some shops don't always plant up though. I personally prefer to plant up though. Done correctly I feel it gives your plants a better chance to establish themselves.
