Pay-by-Scan: This is something Home Depot and several other "Garden Centers" utalize to control costs to themselves and is not always in the best interest of the wholesaler...
Imagine this... a customer pickes up 5 Petunias from one grower and 9 from another grower... the clerk scans the first one and then hits the multiply key giving credit for the 14 to one and none to the other... Hmmmmm
Walmart: An industry estimate states that Walmart will hit $500 BILLION a year in sales by 2010 (5 years away) and will own 12% of all non-auto/non-gasoline retail sales in the US (8% currently). The study goes on to say that by 2010 a typical consumer products manufacturer could have more than 35% of it's sales going thru Walmart....thats scary
An FTC 50 state study found that 40% of plants sold are dead within the first year, and that only 1 in 25 tell the dealer... must all be telling the florists... go figure...
