May he always be carried on the wings of White Doves, and may his knowledge be imparted on those who ask.

As in many aspects of people influencing my life, I don't agree with all of his beliefs, but the respect I have for him is huge. When his earthly light goes out, there will be a hole in the sky.

I send prayers and thoughts that his journey will bring him all the greatness he deserves.

I've said my prayers for his quick and painless passing the past day...now I pray for the end to "endless coverage by every TV station in the world" so I can get on with my life. He was a great man....and man he was...

I'm so sad.....

I KNEW that his days were numbered, I knew that the Lord was calling him up, and I KNEW that I couldn't do anything about his death, and yet, I WILL REMEMBER him tomorrow, the same as yesterday.....an "old world" visionary.
THIS Pope led by example, even at the threat of being assasinated, that this "new world order" needs a good swift "old world kick in the arse"!!

Yes, just a man, but one with huge historical importance. One who made a tremendous difference.

"In the world outside the Catholic Church, John Paul II is best remembered for his epic role in helping bring down Polish communism at the same time as ensuring a soft landing for the society it had scoured. His epic “Fear not!†injunction to Polish Catholics symbolized the importance of the Church in providing the moral center that emboldened them to peacefully and yet forcefully challenge the reign of the regime imposed by Moscow @ and in the process it established the model for the civil society revolutions across Eastern Europe that dismantled most of the Soviet empire with scarcely a shot being fired." Article from Time, last night following Pope's death.

(Father Murray sent this to me from Jerusalem last night)

I've heard the odds-on favourite is Ratzinger. Kinda scary for evangelicals if that's the case. He was once considered too radical to reach the papacy, but he has recently fallen back into favour, and was a close confidant of JP2. Ratzinger was the author of Dominus Iesus (http://www.bereanbeacon.org/canpas.htm).

Like they say about Conclave, "Go in as Pope, come out a cardinal." 117 cardinals with very different congregations - it's anyone's guess.

Funny, that's what Murray said the other night. He also sent me all these links...

Thought you all might find these links of interest in the days and weeks ahead:

A listing of all the eligible cardinals, with their exact age and some
background on them:
http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/scardc3.html
(seems the only two voting cardinals NOT named by Pope John Paul are
Cardinal Ratzinger and Cardinal Gantin, both named by Paul VI in 1977)

Some background on the College of Cardinals and the "Sede Vacante" (Vacant
See):

The Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church (a listing of all the cardinals from
the last several centuries, together with biographical information on them
all):

Yep, and Pope John appointed 114 of them.... It will be interesting to watch and see whom is the "chosen one", and what age he is...if they were to pick someone in say their 50's they could have a 30-40 year run... and assuming they will be of good health, we may see the Vatican take a more active stance in world affairs.

Much speculation says they will pick Ratzinger because of his age (70's) and because he may agree to retire instead of holding the office until death. It seems they are looking for shorter terms in office. Maybe more controllable that way? Don't know.

A pope does not retire, a pope dies. I can't see any cardinal agreeing to such a thing, it flat out just isn't done. The media can spin it anyway they want but most of the media isn't Catholic - this is conservative Catholicism at its finest. I would be surprised to see Ratzinger win, as surprised as if a North American cardinal won. The College of Cardinals isn't that predictable.

I think that's pretty close to an accurate assessment Audra. Speculation is just that... and much of it is leaning towards an Italian again.

Many feel that Ratzinger is too much of a "loose cannon". If there are any "favourites" outside of Europe, the three touted are from Latin America, Africa and Asia respectively.... but again, in this process there are no absolutes outside the conclave.
