CHASSELL TOWNSHIP, MI - A toddler was struck and killed in an apparent hit-and-run accident in Chassell Township Sunday evening.
Authorities are now searching for the drivers of two vehicles that were seen on U.S. 41 around the time the 2-year-old boy was killed.
According to a statement from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post, at around 9 p.m. on Sunday, the boy, whose name is not being released, wandered away from his fenced-in yard onto U.S. 41 near Massie Road where he was struck and killed. The driver of the vehicle did not stop after hitting the child, police said.
Sgt. Jason Wickstrom said the driver of a southbound vehicle told police she saw two vehicles that may have hit the boy.
"She witnessed two vehicles traveling northbound that were possibly the vehicles involved in the accident," he said. "According to the witness, both vehicles put the brake lights on, the first vehicle swerved, the second one did not."
Wickstrom said the drivers were likely not traveling together, but just driving close to each other. He said a description of the vehicles will be released later today, along with more details about what happened.
