About 45 minutes ago there was a 7.0 earthquake about 9 miles from Port Au Prince. The hospital totally collapsed, the presidential palace was severely damaged. The first after shock was a 5.9.

About 2 million people live in Port Au Prince and 9 million within the small island. Haiti is the most impoverished nation in the western hemisphere.

I believe this is the first earth quake in Haiti's history. It was very near the surface of the Earth, and now they are watching for a Tsunami in the Bahamas, Cuba and Dominican Republic.

They are saying it's impossible to drive and even walk as so many building collapsed. It is dark there now too.

May God bless those in harms way, and comfort those who have lost loved ones.

I just watched the news Mark. I join with you.

Oh my... the devastation is incredible. The Palace is flattened.

Probably hundreds buried, with many casualties.

The images just take my breath away.

I just watched one of our customers, who reports for CNN, call in a report from her station in the Domincan, and said that one of the greatest problems for relief, is going to be actually being able to move around...the Port-au-Prince airfield has not, as of yet, been confirmed as intact, but, they DO know, that the flight control tower has collapsed, and that the US, is ready to deploy a self contained "pod" that has all the equipment necessary, to set up a flight control centre!
THEN, relief can start flying in, I've not yet gotten ahold of Dan, and his family, who are somewhere right there......

Yep... a United States Coast Guard plane is taking off in about 15 minutes to do a flyover to check the airport for available landing area, cracks in the runways etc... if alls well they should be up and running by early afternoon.

The USS Comfort (hospital ship) docked early this morning in the area...

More to follow...
