What flowers do you offer for prom corsages?

I am sick of our usual sweetheart roses and mini carns. I am joining the trend of corsage bracelets and accessories (wire, rhinestones, pearls).

I love the mini cymbidium orchids and dendrobiums. The kids around here seem to like the stephanotis too, they don't hold up as well though and you have to buy a box of them and hope you sell it all so you don't have to throw any out. There's also calla lilies and gerberas, lots of other flowers out there for sure.

If you're looking for inspiration, check out the John Henry prom books - lots of great ideas. I especially loved the pocket squares - sold lots of these in lieu of a bout for the guys.

I use bits and bobs of just about anything I have in stock...Stock blossoms, delphinium, monte casino, rainbow asters, solidago, cymb orchids, denrobium orchids, freesia, gerbera, alstro, spray roses, poms, button poms, daisy poms, mini callas. I break flowers apart and use just petals of certain ones, all kinds of foliages cut and pruned with pinking sheers or what not...every corsage I make is different than the next...so I draw from the endless sorts of stuff I have in the shop...

I love to use hyacinth in white, pink and purple because one stem goes a long way. It's cheaper than steph and holds up better. I like to use the flowers from a kalanchoe, all kinds of orchids, spray roses, wax flower, any fillers really, all the stuuf Lori said, except I don't do the petal thing or pinking sheers(yet). I have finally succeeded at selling the bracelets and getting a dress color with out selling exact flowers, which makes it far more fun than making 50 white rose wristlets, 10 pink rose wristlets , 5 red rose wristlets and 2 yellow, blah blah blah....BORING! Admittedly, it is quicker to mass produce a bunch of identical corsages, but after 30 years of same old, same old, I was really ready for a change. It has been a very gradual transition because the kids and Moms around here are so traditional. I have to work hard at convincing them to let us be creative.

I'm with Helen-I love to use hyacinth florets! Freesia is another favorite. We also deconstruct a lot of other flowers....stock, larkspur, snaps, bells of Ireland, hypericom berries. We have beaded garlands that come in all sorts of colors and we often cut that up to use as well. I HATE making regular corsages and bouts, but I LOVE making prom wristlets!
The attached pic shows the use of hyacinth florets.

my corsages have very minimal flowers.
I sell "old school" with the elastic bands- starting at $25 ea I also have a few fitz bracelets but the kids don't want them anymore- they want my bracelets....
I sell Modern corsages on wire bracelets that I create with the oasis wire. The cheaper ones- $35 the flowers arent removeable. On the $40 the flowers are removeable. I sell mainly $40 corsages. BTW- they have NO ribbon..for the most part.

Sticky fingers!

Mostly roses and orchids here--I must admit, we do not get a lot but I still design with wire and tape--can not get the hang of glue--I make a horrible mess-- would love some pointers if you have any--I have 20 fingers when it comes to glue and they are all sticky!!!!

Shannon,
Can you post a pic of one of your corsages made on your own wire bracelet? I would love to see one!

Maybe later when I get home I can... actually there might be some in an old thread here in FC. But I think I do have some on my FB page as well.

Bobbi,

Take your needle-nose pliers and pinch the glue tip to a VERY SMALL opening, the cap will still screw on but it won't just keep flowing out of the tube.

Thank you Linda!!! I can't tell you how much glue I've wasted having it ooze out of the tube.

Like many of you I use all sorts of things: delph, larkspur, berzillia, hyacinth, ranunculas, orchids, hypericum. I did one recently in all spray daisies - it turned out to be really charming. All of mine are custom and I tend to wire & tape the foundation and glue in the details.

BTW-
The "don't squeeze the tube..turn the tube over and let the glue fall out" method rocks. Kinda slow, but it works.

I usually have a giant mess blob of glue that I wasted..I bet 1/2 a tube.
Friday I made 30 corsages and bouts most of which were glued.
I have always stood the tube up in some sort of vessel. A spool of binding wire works good too.

I bet I only wasted maybe a teaspoonful. I did all the work with one tube. I usually go through 2 to 2 1/2 tubes for that many corsages and bouts.
