Shari's Berrie's International Sold

Provide Commerce, the parent company of ProFlowers, has purchased the Sacramento-based gourmet foods manufacturer and drop-shipper, Shari's Berries.

Shari's makes an excellent product both in visual appeal and taste. The company's signature strawberries are found on a number of floral sites including FTD.com.

The strawberries generally start at around $55/dozen plus shipping.

Yet another sign that floral-based companies are seeking growth in non-floral products.

While I'm sure ProF feels this will be a valuable addition to their online offerings, one has to think that perhaps, in part they are thinking that the *take away* from FTD and the added competition for 800F will work in their favor....

Why would they want to take it away from FTD? They're making money off FTD and all the other drop-ship affiliates.

FTD may decide to drop the product or find another gourmet strawberry company but Shari's is the best-known brand around. That's why FTD features Shar's brand name on their site - and not just a generic 'strawberries by FTD' product.

I hope this isn't bragging on my part . . .

Shari's Berries operates just like a florist. They have a florist POS system. I was asked to help them set up their General Ledger and Inventory system. Fine company.

Their marketing strategy in developing their retail stores was brilliant and it did not cost them much.

I saw newspaper photos of people lined up a block long to order their chocolate dipped strawberries for Valentines Day.

It was a great honor to be a very small part of the development of their company.
