I'm doing my first Quinceanera next week, for our neighbor's daughter. I'm wondering if anyone has photos you'd like to share... the web search I did came up with some frightening designs. The girl wants something "fun, funky & modern" and not "old school mexican" (her words). I was thinking of using some white mokaras with pink/purple speckles and fern curls in her bouquet, then something a bit more conservative for the church arrangements. Any input is appreciated!

I'll chime in... Please keep in mind I am Hispanic.

Most Mexicans I know and have done work for love sparkles and bling. "old school Mexican" I think she means not a bunch of lace and pink. Pink is very traditional for Quinceaneras...

I would bet "Fun, Funky, and Modern" would be like Hot pink and Orange with bling..... Or Purple and Green with bling.... Or Aqua and Red with Bling.... Get my drift? Whatever her colors are- just put a modern twist add blings and I bet she'll be happy.

Her church flowers can be just as fun. I mean I don't think I'd glitter 'em up (unless she asked you to) but you can still use the same type of flowers.

And sorry- I don't have any photos. I actually don't do many Quinceaneras. Funny thing about New Mexico....There is this weird unspoken and in closed quarters spoken rivalry with "Spanish" Hispanics and "Mexican" Hispanics. I am Spanish. Spanish do not have Quinceaneras... That's just for Mexicans... Weird I know but whatever.

When I was 14 and some of my friends (usually transfers from So. Cali) were planning there Quinceaneras I was all excited! Woo Hoo 15 year old party! I asked my Grandma about it and she (Who is 100% Castillian Spanish) says "Tonta! Hita- That's for Mexicans! You're not Mexican!"
Oh- OK......HA! Dang! I wanted a party!

Ah- cultural differences. and youthful, blissful ignorance. Growing up I was always a bit confused of who and what I was because I'm so mixed! HA!

Anyhoo- Sorry to get sidetracked- But good luck!

Thank you Shannon, this info is very helpful! I know that the girl wasn't all that into flower, grandma is insisting... so I'm trying to make something cool and modern that she'll like!

I'm doing my first Quinceanera.

I have to laugh about this. I though it was a design with fruit ie quinces. Gave me a real giggle. I looked it up on wiki - still smilling to my self now. So it's a coming of age celebration. I had a look at the dresses and they are very fairy princess.

Jennifer, I have done a few of them. They may as well be a wedding. Seriously. The only difference is that there are usually a whole lot more attendants. ALL of them in the past 14yrs have had wrist corsages though instead of bouquets.

Just do the same thing you do for weddings, try to stay away from roses, that's the "old school" I think. (but you really never know with a 15yr old!) I usually deal with the mothers, the girls are just tagging along if at all. I don't think I have any of the pictures but I will try to dig and see if I can find any, I'm terrible about getting pictures of things I never want to make again!

I will say that I think Shannon may be right on the color. As I said, I've only dealt with the mothers so everything was always pink and white except one that was lavender and white. What color is her dress?

The white mokaras and fern curls sound exactly right, maybe some wire added or bling like Shannon mentioned. That way the girl will be happy and the "old school" guests won't be horrified.

Old school also is Tulle..... Good Grief don't use tulle!!
Unless she asks for it. And yes- like Linda says..may as well have been a wedding....Just no groom.

Also should mention- there will be a BAZILLON people there. Hispanic community is a tight knit bunch. If they like you they tell everybody.
Most Q dresses are light pink BTW.

I've only done a couple, and it's been a while, but I would totally get a picture of her dress and let that be the inspiration. For the modern twist I would use wire, whether in the cascade or as a collar on a nosegay. And I would bling up the handle - make it crystal crusted.

Another idea, what about everything old is new again? Glamelias!!! Seriously, a huge glamelia bouquet for her with a gold and crystal crusted "stem" handle! Would be very cool!
