Has any one made bouts or corsages using ranunculus and/or dahlias? I wouldn't think they would last very long... any thoughts? I am working with a bride, who has a picture so knows it can be done ... ha:spin

yellow dahlia

When is the wedding?

I used yellow dahlia's for a November wedding this year that came from California; the quality of the flowers was very poor and the head size was alot larger than I wanted (I ordered a ranunculs sized flower and got a spider mum size), so ended up using them in the altar arrangement. They were also relatively expensive this time of year. My wholesaler did caution me on the quality, but the bride said it was her favorite flower, so we went with them.

The wedding is the end of June 2007. My wholesaler said they are avaliable. I just don't know how well they will last without water.... would you wire them or glue them? I glue corsages alot, but I haven't glued bouts... will have to do some experimenting.

Experimentation is THE key!

I suggest doing some experimenting because I have seen so many "disasters" from other florists. My good friend is a photographer and sometimes I look at his proofs and I have to say 2 out 5 times the bridal party is carrying dead flowers around or their corsages and bouts are wilted.
I want to share a photo he sent me not long ago asking me what was my initial reaction of the emotion on the bridesmaids face (did she look sad?)

My response: I would be sad too if my flowers were dead even before we reached the reception!!

Oh My.....

OH My!
HOW EMBARRASING!!!
I hope the Bride marched into the florist with this picture!
Or better yet...gave the picture to the competition for them to use in an ad!

Make extra bouts and corsages and extra fresh Ranuncs or dahlias

Personally service this wedding.

Make sure everyone getting pictures taken before the ceremony, have fresh looking flowers.

Make sure the flowers look fresh when the bride walks down the aisle.

Make sure the lights are turned down low at the reception.

AND last but not least....

Make sure everyone has two drinks in their hands at the reception.

Then go home. relax and have two drinks.

ranunculus

I've worked w/ ranunculus in boutonnieres. I do wire and tape them and then drench them with crowning glory. The same technique I use for gerber daisies. Lots of crowning glory!

Extra would do the job

Totally agree with Joe,
I would recommend you to do two set of identical bouts and corsages, where you use one for ceremony& photos, the other one is for the reception, this way you would have a nice fresh flowers all the time.
:thumbsup

Alicia, I have finished courses in July '06 and am just starting off to be free lancing, so there are a lot to learn.
Would you tell me what crowning glory is ?

Your help is appreciated.

Crowning glory is a spray that helps flowers last longer. Not sure exactly what's in it....

As far as dahlias and ranunculus go.... I have used dahlia in bouquets and for bouts and the bride was happy with them. But I'd be nervous about ranunculus. I always try to be honest w/my brides and say something like "yes, those pretty pics in the magazine/book/whatever show that flower, but here is the reality. They can and probably will wilt." I have had this isssue with brides wanting hydrangea florets in boutonnieres (!!!) because they saw it in Martha or some such nonsense. I tell them straight up what will happen and offer silk as an alternative, and show them one so they can see it does look real. 100% of the time they:
1.) appreciate my honesty and knowledge
2.) either go with silk or pick a better-lasting flower.

I heard of a local florist desparately trying to get HIBISCUS for a bridal bouquet! There is customer service, then there's insanity.
