Last night I was drinking a little wine and watching the blah, blah, blah about the election, and it hit me.

All of us here, and I include our members in Canada, Australia and the UK, should be really happy as we watch the election returns on TV next week.

The reason is, we all live in countries where if the "wrong" person gets elected, it's really not that bad. OK, taxes may or may not go up, a few laws will pass that we don't like, the recession will last a little longer (or not)--but those things are almost trivial compared to some countries.

Be thankful that we don't live in one of those countries in Africa, Asia or even the mid-East, where seriously bad things happen if the wrong guy gets into power. Hundreds of thousands of people get killed, villiages and towns are wiped out and all civil liberties can be completely eliminated.

Those things aren't going to happen in our countries and we should be @@@@ thankful for it, regardless of whether "our guy" gets elected.

To True Bigted !!!! we should be so thankful that we live in countries where we have the power to vote and Free speech. Like you said ...your election wont make that much difference to everyday life, and apart from Military decisions, Civilians will be not be losing their lives over it? I WOULDN'T WANT THAT JOB THOUGH !!(president i mean)

I have always thought what a remarkable thing it is we have in this country that we have an election, one leader packs his bags and moves out peacefully and the new elected leader moves in.
Always bothers me when I run into the type of people who have NOTHING good to say about this country. Ugh!
Totally agree bigted. We have much to be thankful for here.

Great points! People get worked up and argue, but in any case we live in a country where we have the freedom to do that. Thanks for reminding me to be grateful to live here in the US, As imperfect as it may be, I do live quite a nice life here.

Yes great points and true to a certain point. Had Dumbo not gotten erected would we be in Iraq?

This wasn't a small mistake he made. This totally qualifies as a "serious bad thing". Dragging your country into a war is about the hugest thing a presidunce can do, especially when it is unnecessary and even unjustified.

Getting out of there is serious as a heart attack.

But this don't mean I don't love America....and your premise it right Ted - it could be worse.

We haven't had a terriorist attack here in seven years. This is the longest period in a long time.
Something must be working. You're right--opinions vary.

Perhaps you are right. On the other hand, if I were a florist in Tehran, I wouldn't want bombs falling down on my head, so it actually matters who the next US President wil be.

An irony that many Americans don't quite realize is that US President controls the lives and deaths of far more non Americans than of Americans.

Two cents.

checks and balances: legislative, executive, judicial.

That's a ridiculous statement. You're saying one of them won't defend our country if we're attacked by Iran? Which one?

I agree, Big Ted, that is a ridiculous statement ! whilst the President of the US may be the most powerful job in the world, it also comes with a HUGE responsibilty to protect the hundreds of thousands of people he governs ? Doesnt it?

Unless you're a moron from Crawford. Then you get to stir up more than you fix.

I know what you're gonna say - but before you do - he's made the world a lot less safe for westerners, and a few of us like traveling outside the US occasionally.

Sorry Jon, on this one you're just plain wrong. I believe that history will show that.

This thread wasn't really about this, but you guys just can't resist. You want change--the next four or eight years will be quite a bit different. We'll see how it goes.

Pretty clear we'll never agree so I'm done with this. I'll stick to flower talk.

Isn't it that AMERICA has not had a terror attack in 7 Years?

I can think of quite a few Countries that have during that time.

I do feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a Democratic society..... however I do think that ( especially in your Nations case) who we vote for can and does has some sort of Ramifications for the rest of the world.
