Working on my website, I have been in business since October 2007, I do not have any formal floral ed. I just happened along FlowerChat and I hope to gain valuable insight from membership. I hope I can contribute some inspiration to the community. I operate from a commercial building.

Rebecca, do you design or manage? If you design, where did you learn? Have you ever worked in a florist/flower shop prior to opening your shop?

Welcome Rebecca! How did you get into the flower business? How is it working out for your so far? What do you think your biggest challenges are right now?

Hi, rebecca,

Did you have any floral experience before you opened your shop in 2007? If you did not, do you have a designer on staff?

Hi Debby... thanks for your interest in this community. However you need to start your own intro thread. There are questions on the New Member Intro page that need to be answered for you to become a member here.

I design and manage my shop. This is my first experience with flowers/flower shop, I learned from spending a few months with the previous owner. I got into the flower business because my husband and I were looking to buy a business and flowers seemed like they would be fun. I do not have a designer on staff, it is me and my delivery driver.
I took over October 1, 2007, and was thrilled when June came and I made it through every major floral holiday and was still having fun. Then on June 13 the floods came through Cedar Rapids, and my shop, being downtown and two blocks from the river, let in 8 foot of water. So far my biggest challenge has been dealing with that. Therefore I've had some time on my hands and have been excited to find this website so that I can get insight and ideas about the floral industry.

Rebecca, thanks for answering some questions. Considering I had no experience with flowers whatsoever when my parents bought this shop in 1974...the owners "trained" me for three months (they were supposed to stay on for 1 year) then told me they could teach me no more....I sought out my state florists' association and networked with other florists. I also took every design workshop, seminar, class offered. At that time, FTD gave wonderful workshops. Our State Association is very education oriented and you should look around for more education. If your state offers such, join in...join up... and take advantage of every opportunity to learn.
Best Wishes

Thanks for the advice! The flood has given me the opportunity to take this break to network and learn. I have heard from many people and read in some of the trade magazines about those who have had no floral experience, just the desire, and have gone on to do great things. Wow, look at you, after no experience now an Excecutive Secretary/Treasurer, Congratulations!

Thanks and more thanks to my peers. It gives me lots to do in my "free time" :hammer: as well as keeping up our website.
Take a look at what our association does including our upcoming October show...(calendar of events page) at www.msfga.net
