We use little dots to add or subtract from a member's "reputation."
But is that what we are actually doing?

A day or two ago, one of our members made some unpopular comments. When the dust cleared, the member ended up with NEGATIVE RED DOTS!

Did that mean that the member has a poor reputation? I don't think so! Instead, the member just had a whole bunch of people that DISAGREED with the position taken.

Please remember that when we members click on the little scales, we are asked if we agreed or disagreed with the member's post. The result is that members accumulate GREEN dots for posting messages that everyone agrees with! RED dots are accumulated for taking unpopular positions.

So the goal, it would seem, is to make postings that everybody agrees with!

Is that what we want? A Floral Nation Of Sheep?

May I, in my usual humble fashion, suggest that the dot thing be revised?

Instead of asking whether we agree or disagree with the posting, why not ask if the posting was GOOD or BAD.

A GOOD posting would be one that is thoughtful, insightful, accurate, informative, or in some other way contributes to the common good.

A BAD posting would be one that is thoughtless, shallow, repetitious, erroneous or negative to the common good.

All the best!

I think the criteria you stated is pretty much what folks use in handing out rep already - the diasgree/agree phrasing is really moot. I disagree with many posts, but wouldn't snap somebody with a bad rep because of my difference of opinion ....

Actually, you are asked if you approve or disapprove. Kinda what you're proposing, no?

FYI - As a side note, I'm considering using Red Dots to punish people who abuse the Commentary forum. :)

My general use of the reputation system revolves solely around posts that are either really good---green

Or direct personal attacks on another community member---red

simple as that

I have had many, many posts that go against the popular vote, but have never gotten a red dot. There are many here who post things that go against the popular grain that do not get red dots...

I approve many posts that are well versed, subatantially relevant, very moving or kind whether I agree with the idea behind the post or not, I also leave a brief explanation of why they are getting a green dot and my name....

I will disapprove of posts that are mean spirited, unprofessional or otherwise distasteful. I also leave an explanation of the reason behind the red dot and my name.....

I've never given a red dot to any registered member (no matter how rude and obnoxious they may have been). I only give out green ones. I don't care how ticked I may be at someone for their opinion, it has never crossed my mind to affect their reputation negatively.

Bill - I think they already are what you said - if agreed with or kudos, green, if disagree or bad advice or bs attacks (yeah I gave a few reds to 12fux, and he back at me) then they get red (very rare). I think I may have tossed a couple at Tenley back when too, reciprocally.

All adds up to a reputation. Do you generally give good advice or are you just an argumentative dick like me? :>

But heck, Ryan and I have even tossed back and forth a couple reds just for goofs.

But even people I disagree with 90% of the time like Sfox gets nothing but green from me (tho I don't think he gives them back, hmmmmm)

and by the way - I always sign my greens so they know who they came from.

By the way - If you're talking about Henry - it's all fixeable - He's a nice guy who got some backlash cuz he sounded a bit like 12dux broken record crap (I'm guessing) I gave him a green (never gave him a red) and a green overrides a red, and a green from a member with a good rep will override a couple reds.

Some greens, some reds...and with a margarita or two...SOUNDS LIKE YOUR OLD LIFE, JON!!!!

It's my birthday on Saturday, so until Monday...

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND, Y'ALL!!!

What is reputation?

This is pretty much the standard definition given by other boards:

"The reputation system is very similar to the Karma system seen on other popular websites and forums (Slashdot.org, for example). Its purpose is to hopefully give users an idea of how respected, knowledgeable, helpful, gracious, etc., a person is. It is a system in which you rate your peers. It is a system that, hopefully, will make you think twice about your posts. Eventually, people with higher reputation scores will enjoy a few forum 'perks'; access to special forum areas, for example. Try to help others by giving reputation to the people you believe know what they are talking about and are the most helpful! Try to earn more reputation by helping others and giving the most detailed answers, while avoiding being disrespectful to others."

However, I'm not sure if this board implements "rep power", meaning the more green skittles you have, the more weight you carry when you "rep" or "neg" someone.

Yes, that's the standard vBulletin definition for this feature. And yes, we use the rep power system, so long term active users carry more weight.

Rep power is shown right above the green & red dots.

What does that mean?

The commentary forum was created by request for articles and lengthy insightful industry posts. Lately it's been used for short off-topic posts about any old thing. Our admin team tries to move off-topic posts to more appropriate forums.

So yes, as Mikey said ... it was just a poke :)

Is there a chance that this post was the one or did I just happen to post this one at a bad time.

Just checking

No, I don't think you've been a culprit :)

There are usually a few each week that we have to move. It's just part of the job.

Oh my....
I did not know that we were supposed to give out green or red dots...:wide:
So to all those who I have not dotted I hope this makes up for it!:blowkiss::blowkiss::blowkiss:
I will try to remember to hand out dots in the future!:wallhead:
