We use little dots to add or subtract from a member's "reputation."
But is that what we are actually doing?
A day or two ago, one of our members made some unpopular comments. When the dust cleared, the member ended up with NEGATIVE RED DOTS!
Did that mean that the member has a poor reputation? I don't think so! Instead, the member just had a whole bunch of people that DISAGREED with the position taken.
Please remember that when we members click on the little scales, we are asked if we agreed or disagreed with the member's post. The result is that members accumulate GREEN dots for posting messages that everyone agrees with! RED dots are accumulated for taking unpopular positions.
So the goal, it would seem, is to make postings that everybody agrees with!
Is that what we want? A Floral Nation Of Sheep?
May I, in my usual humble fashion, suggest that the dot thing be revised?
Instead of asking whether we agree or disagree with the posting, why not ask if the posting was GOOD or BAD.
A GOOD posting would be one that is thoughtful, insightful, accurate, informative, or in some other way contributes to the common good.
A BAD posting would be one that is thoughtless, shallow, repetitious, erroneous or negative to the common good.
All the best!
Bill
