It reminded me of an idea I've had for years, so thought I would start a new thread.
Okay.
So, how many of you have had this happen, huge event, wedding, holiday come up and you are short a GOOD< QUALIFIED< designer, all around person?
Me, LOTS of times.
So, what if we posted here, when that happens. Let's say Cathy has a huge event in January, and she's short a designer. I, on the other hand, don't have any looming events, and would like a vacation to Sunny California. So we work out some kind of deal, where maybe she pays to GET me there, and then I work for minimum pay, (helps her), or maybe work for trade, because then in March I need Cathy to help with a huge wedding I have here.
Is this a pipe dream on my part???
This actually started as a pipe dream years ago, when I thought it would be fun to "trade" jobs with a florist in Europe for a couple of weeks, I go there, they come here. Then I thought to myself, " oh yes, Paris in springtime, how lovely!!!" and then reality struck, the French florist is saying "Amarillo, Texas"
" No, tres terrible' " (pardon my french).
So anyway, anyone even remotely see the opportunity here?
Maybe this is more along the lines and logic of what Rob spoke of in an earlier post, " what we could do, if we all joined together...." or something like that.

Anyway, just the thoughts of an overworked business woman!

Sign me up!!!

Let's see, California in January, Florida in March, anyone out there in Wyoming or South Dakota in August need a hand?

This is not exactly what you are talking about but my sister who worked as a florist for many many years and resides in Florida now flies yp here (cold Detroit) every Valentine's Day to help us for at least four days, sometimes a week. She plans it now and watches online for the best airline ticket prices and secures them in advance. She plans some of her vacation days at her full-time day job around it also. She gets paid hourly a mid-range wage and gets to come see her family and old friends. You know how at Valentine's Day its usually so hard to find decent extra help as it is all the days of the week sometimes and not Saturday focused like most holidays.

I don't know how serious you are, but for those of you who are not tied down I encourage it. My sister absolutely loves doing this every year.

Sometimes her daughter my niece who is a full-time teacher used to come back and work at Mother's Day as she worked here full-time for three years. Now that Florida is having school year round with mini breaks she can't do it, Bummer!

Seriously - it's a really ingenious idea parie!

I thought of this many times

The day I retired that I would offer my service at major holiday to some florist who needs a extra pair of hands. If I was rich, I would cover my own cost, (if I win the lottery) but would love to go work at different florist and towns to do what I love and to see new towns. My thinking would be a new florist at each major holiday. I would also go to florist that really needs my help.

Parie -

Great idea. I've flown designer friends in to help for holidays and large events in the past. It energizes all of us here and brings in fresh perspectives.
Let's say Cathy has a huge event in January, and she's short a designer.
Happened to land a good one today...will keep you posted. :)

traveling

This is a little different spin on the cross country design trips.....but, when I had my shop in Missouri....each year in the fall, 4 AIFD designer friends of mine would meet at one of our shops for the weekend and completely design, create and display Christmas. It was magnificant and completely done in a weekend with such strong workers and designers. We didn't have to stretch it out for weeks or months.

Each weekend, we would travel to another one's shop until we made it to all of the shops and everyone was completely finished with the Christmas decor. What great fun it was and I don't think any of us ever traveled more than 4 hours to get to these shops.

Since I am semi-retired, maybe it is time to go back to some of the road trips again and do the "florist helping florist" thing.
