Reputation System Update discussion

I have less skittles now! But understand the needed change.

I'm a member of other vbulletin forums where some members have rep power in the hundreds of thousands.

Isn't this whole rep thing just a popularity contest? You have over 5,000 posts and a rep of 78, while others have 1,000 posts or less (some less than 500) and have nearly the same rep. Is everything they say really brilliant or do people just like them better?

I think a lot of members post counts add up just from casual conversation in chat threads. I think the rep system is good and helps keep people in check.

That's right - the rep system is based on length of membership, number of posts and quality of posts. You can have a higher rep with fewer posts if you're posting thought provoking stuff. If you're all about the "ya, me too" posts then your rep won't be as high.

I don't know if popularity contest is quite accurate ... but it's a measure of the regard in which a person is held within the community.

I'm so glad that was explained to me. I thought I had offended someone or because I haven't had time to visit, my rep was lowered. Now, everything makes sense.

can you tell me the difference between the light green and the dark green buttons under the rep #?

I don't 'know' anyone

I can't see how. As someone who has been lucky enough to receive and has dished out a fair few herself, it can't possibly be based on popularity as I am the other side of the ocean and 'know' hardly anyone. Add in the fact that most have an alias I can only base it on what I read.

Well, thank goodness I had not offended everyone to lose half of my green dots! In a recent post, I ended my comment with "fire away" or something similar, and it looked like everyone had done just that! :faint: :faint:

Isn't it funny how affected we are by green dots. :)

Why has everyone lost Rep Power??

I am wondering it seems that everyone has lost rep power. I was a 4 and now I am a 2 with no red dots. I see everyone on my contacts list has lost a significant amount of rep power. One person on my list was a 13 and is now a 6. Why is this?????????

I'm too tired to search for the thread but, there was a recent update to the reputation system. Do a search for reputation upgrade to get the skinny. No worries, it wasn't anything you did :)

hmm......since 2002 I never minded the dots....
I still don't mind the dots, but love the comments !!
What's a dot for a friend.....appreciation of their being here and sharing!
other than that, what the hell are we talking about dots again for?
:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Victoria,

I have made another comment on this issue in another thread.

We should all care about our reputations.

What I find disconcerting is that our reputations are weighted on our tenure here and the number of posts.

Let good, smart, brilliant and necessary comments be judged on their own merit, not some artificial scale.

It is offensive to think that if you post 30,000 posts that your reputation is worth more than someone with 300. It is just too arbitrary.

Or if you were a member at FC's inception, that your reputation is valued more than someone signing up 2 months ago.

To continue on this arbitrary logic, since Ryan lives in Canada he could weight all Canadians comments higher the U.S. participants.

Lets' carry out this logic in a different manner.

How woul you all like rep power based on .....

How about weighting these comments based on gender.

All men comments count for two when all women count for one.

Lets discuss race.....

Lets discriminate on religion

Let's base rep power on politics.....

Have I made my point, yet?

Sorry, i just don't see the logic in this thinking.

Sincerely
Joe

Joe, I agree, repuation is a valuable thing. And I too enjoy seeing the green dots line up in a long parade. However, all this kafuffle over a number that really doesn't affect how I will continue to behave here or in my life makes not a lot of sense.

Whether I'm a "legend" or a beginner, my worth is not measured in dots of any colour, rather it's measured by how I am received.

I think they look like little squares :jester

Isn't this what the dots are really about, measuring how we are each received by our peers here?

Personally, I never noticed the dots very much until these threads about dots kept appearing. It's a lot of fun to give a green dot.
