Have a bride who is going with a roman theme for her wedding. They are going to be doing the centerpieces themselves with green and purple grapes everywhere. She is looking at doing green and purple for her flowers as well, but wants to keep the cost down. (way down, I am afraid) I checked on roman weddings and have seen a lot about using herbs? Don't think she would be interested in this, just flowers. Anyone have any good ideas using purple and green?

I picture rosemary, kale ( the purple and green kind), grapes, gold leaves, dark small red apples, , gold braiding intertwinned...maybe incorporate a ring of salal leaves like they use to wear...should be fun...take pictures!

hmm the grape thing sounds like the "Designer Wedding" that was on TLC or HGTV last Saturday night. That was Tuscan and the designer used grapes to fill the urns and left just enough room for accents of grouped roses and white lilies

During the consultation we told her we could do something with grapes. We were going to incorporate grapes and ivy into the head table piece as well as grapes and ivy on the cake. We received an email from her the next day saying her fiance doesn't want grapes at all. He thinks the grapes in the centerpieces will be enough. They only want flowers for the girls, nothing else incorporated.

Green Hydrangia, Purple Lizi and grapes...with galax leaves, bear grass and "stuff"... love the Kale idea as well...

Mark Anthony filled a room with rose petals for Cleopatra....ah, a florist's dream.

I like the laurel wreath idea too.

Lots of pillows and columns.

Hydrangea or viburnum for green, the kale sounds nice too, or herbs, such as sage. For purple, try orchid or lisianthus.

Have fun!

Don't know if this will help but I have a roman flower book where it says they sometimes carried cornucopias of violet blooms mixed with saffron & herbs. It was also says it was traditional to use mrytus. Flowers used were anemone, erica, heleborous, hyacinths, delph, iris, calendula, roses and viola.

Re: Who's running the Feather Concession?

If they're doing their own centerpieces, you might want to get a piece of running the Feather concession just outside the vomitorium.

Other vendors (back in that day) sold sponge brushes, but that was just outside another venue.

Any way to make a buck, EY? "]

Thanks for your help everyone. We were bummed when we heard they were doing their own centerpieces and wanted to spend very little money. We had visions of colums, urns, and lots of grapes along with the flowers. I tried the wreath thing during the consult, no go. I wanted to put grapes on the cake along with other things, no go. I honestly don't see what is going to be so "roman" about this roman wedding, but I will do what they pay me for and keep my visions for the next time.

Tell me more about these "sponge brushes".

Or not. LOL

OK then,, more about the sponge brushes....

Well Beth, back in that day, there was no TP on a roll like we're used to today. Which also brings to mind, the recent NUTS in suggesting that, to GREEN the environment and/or save a tree, we should not be using more than 1 sheet of TP at a time, per event. "]

Of course, those same people have hired other people to perform that task for them, unlike WEE LITTLE PEOPLE.

Anyway, the concession required full support such as sponge divers and stick cutters.

In turn, the sponges were stuck to the stick, and the concessionaire would sell the SPONGE ON A STICK (preferably a NON POINTED ONE) to the incoming commode crowd.

Having just feasted at the typical Roman Orgy event, other needs were met by enterprising entrepreneurs. It seemed to be a mixed crowd as some frequented the vomitorium, only purchased a feather, thus eliminating a duplication of services and redundent fees. I think the feather was reusable but probably not the sponges.

None of this was in any of my History books when I was back in School and inquiring minds want to know.

As to the THUMBS UP or THUMBS DOWN regarding CAESAR and the GLADIATORS, the jury is still out on that one too! "] I'd hate to be the guy on the ground watching the confusion on the face of my opponent as Caesar can't get it right.

Wow Toto,

You're a wealth of knowledge! I am impressed!

My inquiring mind is wanting to know where you learn this kind of thing. It is oddly fascinating. LOL
