I have been a designer for 15 years but I bought this business in July of 2008.
I took FTD courses but found it was a waste of time and money. Although I can make really nice bows now. lol
I was reffered by wildflowerchicago when I told her I was also in the process of discontinuing the use of floral services such as FTD and Teleflora.
I hope to gain information about running my business, I know there are alot of pitfalls during the first year and I am hoping that other florists will be interested in sharing some of their saving ideas to me as well as design techniques. As I learn from them I hope to reciprocate that information to other new members and also offer design techniques I have learned as well.
Currently I am working to build my business in t

Hello Everyone! Nice to meet you!

Business: Capitol Square Floral and Gift Shop

Location: Columbus OH (Downtown) USA

Type of Business: Retail Florist: We specialize in weddings, everday gifts, party arrangements, in home designs, corporate design (lobby arrangements) and anniversary designs.

About Me:

My name is Robin Swaneck, I grew up in a small town in East Tennessee. My grandmother taught me how to cut and prune roses at a very young age and then taught me basic design skills to make arrangements for my mom for special days.
I started designing full time at a grocery store when I was 16 and have gradually built my way up to ownership. I excel at making arrangements that are not (cookie cutter designs). Most of my clients tell me about the recipient and I create an arrangement specifically to their own personalities. I think my grandmother taught me how to do this, I seem to hit the mark almost every time. I stand behind my design work and quality of flowers. If a customer is not satisfied I wil replace, refund, or do both to make sure my clients are happy and are taken care of well.
All of my clients are family to me and as such I treat them with great respect and care. I excel in customer relations by listening to my customers and treating each order like it is the only one for the day.
I am interested in getting to know other florists and designers. I am new to owning my own business and I would love to know of any pitfalls or mistakes others have made so I can avoid them if at all possible. I have currently told FTD and Teleflora that I am in nolonger need of their services. I am a designer and as such I believe it is time I really show my clients what can be created by an artist. Not just mindlessly copying someone else's work. I am open to sharing design styles and photos as long as they are reciprocated. I believe we are a harmony of artful musicians that build off of one another and can excel to even greater heights if we start designing again instead of falling into easy arrangement styles and designs. We need to take control of our client base again and have our customers come to us because we are on the cutting edge of design and style.
