Audra, I'm sorry for the tragic and stupid loss of Officer Ducette this weekend... why people still drink and drive is so beyond my understanding.

I don't understand it either, never have. It was a shock to hear of the accident, I hadn't heard yesterday and found out at work this morning. Such a preventable loss and such a sad one.

I just saw this on the news this morning ... so sad.

Second time in about a week that a small Ontario town has an officer in the line of duty for the first time in the history of that police force. Seems like no place is "safe" any more.

Sad and very true. The Sault has been lucky previously, we've seen these incidents happen elsewhere and now it's up close. And personal, I never worried about my cousin Shawn's safe in that way as a Sault cop but I will now.

It was the first time in the history of Windsor as well... which is a remarkable thing when you consider there is a mere bridge between them and Detroit.

Into question

The loss of life for any reason is tragic. But why is someone dying after being hit by a drunk driver any worse than dying in some other type of accident?

Now before everyone tries to kill me, please, all I'm trying to do is show the reality of life.

Smoking is bad, and now that our society has pushed the issue to the forefront, it won't be too long before there will be public hangings for the offense of smoking in public. Little far fetched, maybe. But the reality is that society usually will go off the deep end on almost any issue especially if that issue is promoted as a good and just cause. We laugh at the society of the 1600's that branded a woman with a Scarlet letter because witchcraft was the evil in the forefront at that time. And don't just laugh it off because according to the professionals of the time, witchcraft was killing people too.

Drinking and driving is a bad idea, period. But drinking and smoking are vices, and vices have been around since the beginning of time. Our society seems to think that it is better or more capable than past societies and can elminate vice. To me that is just arrogant. Look at prostitution. It has been around since the beginning of time and every society has tried to do away with it and it still flourishes. Drinking while terrible will be around too. We can demonize the people who drink and drink, but we will never get rid of it.

I've lost family members and they were killed by a drunk driver, but I've realized that in order to live life, you have to follow what the bible says and forgive the offender. That doesn't mean not to reasonablely punish them, but to also forgive.

One of my family members was an alcoholic and drove drunk all the time. I went as far as to try to get them committed, but it didn't work. Today, they have been sober for over 15 years and are very active in AA, which is a fantastic group. This same person who put thousands of people in danger, today is now in courtrooms, where judges put absolute faith into his recommendations as to whether or not an individual who was ordered to be in AA should be allowed to stay free or go to jail.

Pray for the families of those killed, offer your assistance if possible and forgive those that have created such a tragic event. You never know what God has in store for that persons future.

Yes it is. Being killed by a drunk driver is like murder... you know with a weapon. Calling it an "accident" is an incredible misnomer.

Smoking is a choice, drugs are a choice... I'm certain Officer Ducette, or any one else killed by a drunk, chose that particular end to his life.

That being said, this thread was started to express sympathy.
