Since seo, adwords and analytics are my weakness, can you help me with this question please?

If I type in florist right now FTD pops up top. How can I find out how much FTD is paying to be up top?

And how much are they paying to be in the sponsored links?

Is there a FF plugin or does it show it in spyfu? Do I need to log into my Google account, set up an ad words account and query it?

Spyfu is one of the better known services for gauging competition ad spend on pay per click. It's not 100% accurate, but the bigger the company the more precise it is.

If you're wondering about the organic results, FTD is likely paying in the neighbourhood of $10-20k per month for a pro SEO service. I should know who they are using, but it's just after lunch and I'm ready for a nap that isn't going to happen ... so the name has vanished from my head.

You can use the AdWords tools to learn what your initial spend would have to be to compete for the term "florist" but that won't tell you what FTD is spending.

Thanks a lot Ryan.

Sometimes clicking the the thumbs up button isn't enough when I was to really express my heart felt thanks.

Hey Ryan, (and others)

Do you think they pay very much to be there? I know that Joe Blow with a crappy site pays more due to quality score.

I know we can't quantify it, but do you have any idea on a percentage? I am thinking crappy site cost/2.5 is about right. So they may pay $1 while crappy site pays $2.5?

Spyfu is interesting. Last time I looked at it, it said that Chevrolet spends $37k/day on pay per click. You want to hear my conspiracy theory on what REALLY happened to the auto industry? :)

It's possible to build some estimations - Spyfu does give estimates on daily spend, etc.

As an example of quality score at work, this past V-day when many people were paying $3.50+ on Valentine's terms the campaign I was running for Martin's was at about $0.98.

We've also heard from FTD in the past that they have a PPC customer acquisition cost of $25.

$37k sounds like a lot to us, but they only need to sell one car to have revenue match the expense.

It's like a florist spending $50 / day.

To bid for florist keyword is not a good idea. Becaue normally any one who wants to send flowers will surely add a place/zip code/city (or even country) with it.

And the keyword florist (one word) will be too expensive to bid for.

I accidentally did that one day. Cost me over 200 bucks in clicks, and since I don't offer "Worldwide Delivery" on our site, we got bupkiss out of it!!!

(Lesson learned there!)
