Debbie is now Detective 5-0! SHe caught her first shoplifter Friday afternoon.

WE had a seminar 2 weeks ago on Shoplifting and what we can do and can't do and she told us how to approached them etc and it was just like she told us would happen.

THe scenario started innoncently when they asked the price of a stuff animal. She kept a eye on the boys and one was real close to the cart where the plush was. she followed them and notice the plush in their bag as ours. She came back to get me and we both started to look for the boys. One of other mall workers that we asked to keep on eye on them told us they where in Zellers.

WE found them I then approached them and asked if they could open their bag and when I saw the plush, i asked them to show me their receipt. THe reply was, we do not carry receipts. I then asked them to come with me that we would ge the police to settle this.

THey came back to my store and I called the police from my office. They came back and offered to pay for it them. I refuse and we waited for the police to show up.

THe culprit was 16 years old turning 17 in 3 months. His accomplice was 18. As the police does his job and prepare his summons ot apprear in court etc, I get the mall security to come and issue them a notice of trespass prohibiting them off the ground for 2 years.

Also the guy who did not steal parents happen to walk by and ask their sons what was happening. THe mom and dad where furious at their sons and then realize which store they stole from, which is a lady we know from my wife work. I would not be surprises he got a whopping when he got home.

THe law states that his friend is as guilty as the one who stole because he knew the guy store it. We could have goten him charge also if we wanted to, but we decline as the parents will take care of him.

As for the other one, he will have to appear in court, and explain to his mom about getting a lawyer etc.
He may only get a slap on the wrist, but the police told us that he would have a record, plus the cost of lawyer and the cost of embarresment in the mall people looking at them when they where with the police officer.

Book Them Dano!!!!!!!!

All over a plush that was $7.95 and on sale for 50% off....

Book them indeed... and may the charges actually stick.

My alma mater (no pun intended ) was burned to the ground this week, thanks to the work of a 15 and 16 year old. Jerks.

Luc,
Good for you...it is not the price of the item that it is the principle. It was not his to have unless he paid the price for it. He will be paying the price for his even larger faux pas...

My mom always said the penalty for lying is always bigger than if you own up right away to what you have done wrong.....

Stealing is lying and in this case the peanlty will be much larger monitarily for what that plush would have cost him...but he will come away with a good lesson learned and maybe will think twice in the future.

Good work Luc!

I stole something once - tic tacs from the corner 7-11 when I was 5 years old. Stuffed them inside my pants! When my mom discovered them (because I rattled when I walked), she marched me back to the store to return them, and threatened to call the police on me.

Some lessons just stick; hope this lesson sticks for these young men. And thank you for helping teach them the lesson!

If they are under 21 and are not just out and out dirt balls, I call the parent to pick up and tell them they are banned from the store at least a year.

I know this seems light but sometimes, great parents raise great kids, who make mistakes. For many kids the embarrassment of being caught and their parents finding out will be more then enough to deter them from chancing it again.

While calling the police is harsher on the kid and seem justified it is usual the parent that sufferers, emotionally, and financially. The least you will pay as a parent is $500.00 and that is if you are lucky.

I like to give kids the benefit of the doubt and a second chance. But you have to do what works best for you and what you believe.

Tracy,

Too funny! Reminds me of when my daughter was a young teen...she stole a cheese grater from The Olive Garden! Who knows why? I drove her back to the restaurant and made her march in there and give it back with a heartfelt apology. Teach your children well.

When I was 12 years old I stole a tube top (remember those?) from a nearby boutique. I had never taken anything from anyone in my life. I got it home and was scared that some way the police would find out. I coward inside every time I heard a siren.

I decided after a week that I could not go through with it. I went back to the store and tried to sneak the item back on the shelf. When I was putting it back they caught me and thought I was just stealing it at that moment.

I still thank God that the women who caught me took me in their back room, I started to cry and explained that I was returning it because I could not live with myself.

They scolded me, comforted me and sent me on my way not to return for 1 year. A year later when I started earning babysitting money, I returned to their store and spent my own earned money there for clothes out of appreciation until they closed when I turned 18.

I will never forget their forgiving hearts and the fact that they were willing to give me a second chance.

I guess that is one reason why I try to be forgiven and give a second chance to teens today.

Wow, what an awesome and touching story. I love that you returned it, and that they took mercy on you for that.

Hugs,
