A bride contracted with me today who has a Fall wedding - color palette of jewel tones - purple, magenta, chartruese and blue. She wants her 7 Maids to carry a single white calla lily and she will carry a hand-tied with a bit of cascade. Her bouquet will be the entire color palette with the inclusion of ivory. The single callas are not for budgetary reasons, it's because her Mom did the same for her wedding years ago.

Okay, so I've never done a single flower and I'm a bit perplexed. Always thought it was a bit awkward to carry just one stem. I love the sentiment behind it but what can I do to ensure the single calla will have enough visual impact? Is this look dated?

I am not a fan of these Katie either. But maybe you could put some nice satin or chiffon ribbon with a diamante jacket with a bit of the ribbon tied loosly at the top maybe??

you could also suggest maybe a couple of loops of lily grass to give it a bit more visual interest.

I do the single calla often. Usually I wrap a couple of verigated aspadistra or ti leaves and some draping lily grass and a nice crystal broach (sp?)or buckle. Make sure you get the highest grade open cut calla possible. Tracey D has a good online source I believe.
I've braided ribbon on the long stems of Gerberas and French tulips for a different romantic effect. I've been seeing a lot more of these singles lately due to budget cutbacks and plan to see a few more. I'd rather have these brides than the ones that want 20 mini callas for $50! They are driving me to the drink. I guess it is time to get creative.

we do these often though I am not a fan myself. We have done it in two different ways
1 Just a very long stem calla with the largest open head you can get and a Calla leaf to back it

2 cut shorter but still large head with looped china grass and a plaited palm and lovely ribbon and bling, perhaps you could do the ribbons to match the brides pallette and tie it all together that way one girl with magenta, one chartreuse etc.

Good luck

I like the jeweled buckle idea! I have not done too many of these single flower weddings. Sorry, I have nothing to offer.

Not to hijack, but I have a Mother's Day wedding who wants long open cut white callas for her maids. Thats all, just 5~6 long white callas to be carried upright (like a regular hand tied, not an arm bouquet). I am STRUGGLING with this look...I think it's going to look like they are carrying a baseball bat. Plus, I think it will poke their dresses in a weird way as they walk down the aisle. Naturally, she found the picture in a magazine (only the picture is of a bride with the bouquet laying on her lap). How can I not make this look awful!?!?!? I guess I should be happy to have low labor bouquet to make.

Batter up!
I think your execution won't be the deciding factor; the girls will have to be taught how to carry them. The only way I can think to make them graceful would be to convince the bride that they should be a scepter style and carried to the side.

Go to this months (maybe last months) issue of Florist Review.
Bill Harper made the most amazingly beautiful composite calla.
It took my breath away. I'll go look for it. Be right back.
Couldn't find it
It had about 3 callas, rolled into a composite with rolled aspidistra, other foliage - light and tied together at the bottom with a rhinestone band.
It was BEAUTIFUL!!!
I think that Bill Harper is one of the most amazing designers on the planet.
His stuff is sooooo pretty.
I am one who believes that pretty is an art form too!!!

Hey

Ask the bride for a pic from her Moms wedding. If she want them the same - there you are.

Hopefully she wants them done with a twist. But it may be interesting to see what Moms had way back when.

Oops maybe not so way back when. I have a bride this summer - I did her moms wedding. But the mom and I aren't that old! Mom was one of my first brides.

Just found this calla lily hand tied bouquet, is this what you mean amy??

hopefully the link works.. i like this and have done some similar but could not find my pic, think its on my other computer.

Paula, I like that one! I am attaching a bad scan of the picture she gave me. I got some open cut callas in the other day (for a wake) and my problem is that the stems are SO thick. I have tried to arrange them into a pretty bouquet, but the stems are huge! I was getting a cramp in my hand just holding them...I can't imagine how these poor girls' hands will be after a whole day.

Perhaps you could either just use the mini calla or a mix of both.

I see what you mean about the stems though, they would be very long but could be sold as elegant maybe?? Especially if she carries them at a slant, you know a litte more informal, you could cut the inner calla stems short to avoid them all being thick? The stems are really thick at the bottom but i have found them to be thinner as you go further toward the head.

Hope all of this waffle makes sense amy..

That's a beautiful bouquet.
Amy, tell your Bride it's just not lady-like to have long stems hitting the Maids in the crotch as they are walking down the aisle. That will make her think twice...:redface2: JMHO

I tried that. I went just short of telling her that it will look falic! She is totally opposed to having them carry them on a slant (like Miss America). I told her that she would have to explain to the maids that they will have to carry them away from their body. I can just picture these poor girls, if theyy don't get hand cramps from carrying the huge stems, they will be having severe lactic acid burn from holding the bouquets a foot from their bodies. I have to just put on my flower prostitute hat and make the @@@@ things!

What would you all charge for something like this?
