Here we go again. Another major floral holiday and it is slow. We will be busy doing prom work and some local business. Valentine's Day is the only true local florist holiday. The other holidays are "wire holiday's" and it shows. I guess that I should get a warm fuzzy when I think of the fact that the wire services and "order gatherers" are going to post millions in orders. They even get to go on a cruise once a year to show what great a "florist" they really are.

Let's define the word "florist": One who sells flowers.

Whether the wire service or the order gatherer sells flowers or floral orders can be debated elsewhere. I don't care what others think. I know. I also know that ANY REAL FLORIST who fills an order for these folks is doing the industry short and long-term damage. Short term if you are not a member of a wire service, and long term if you fill orders for one. This damage shows on the REAL LOCAL FLORIST such as our shop. There are recipients in our area that get their flowers from other wire service florists and shipping companies. These are orders where the majority of profit is made out of our state. This means the dollars are not here where all the hard work is being done. Many a florist believes they are making money on the wire-ins, but they negate the fact that the wire service is making more profit or the fact that they could make more without a wire service existence. When I hear that wire services are the only viable option, I know that florist is not very resourceful and would benefit from dropping their wire service. Then they would see just how resourceful they could be. They just don't envision customers calling direct to the florist. They feel they have to be a middleman. We will always have customers that insist we do it for them for one reason or another. More than that and you are an order gatherer.

You know, ethics are often mentioned in this forum. Are ethics really determined by others? If they are, then there are no principles in place to begin with. With children, this is called testing boundaries. The simple fact is that somebody advertising in my town when their business is 100 or 1000 miles away is unethical. They know that they will not be delivering the orders they receive. They will be gathering those orders to re-send them for a commission and a rebate. We, in the floral industry, call them order gatherers. These are the worst for the industry. If a REAL LOCAL FLORIST is also an order gatherer then they are no different than the one 10,000 miles away in an office. They are taking my local orders and claiming it is just business. Yes, I have every opportunity to do the same in this free country. But, I won't. I feel that my business should be conducted in my area. Opinions vary. If you want to conduct business in my area then so be it. It is not illegal, but unethical is different. I let you have your customers, so let me have mine. No, I don't own the customers in my area. My customer base can shop anywhere they like. Try this in your ad, though: "We are not actually in this town (contrary to what you imply or outright state), but we will send the order to a florist that is (not hand pick) and take some money off the top for selecting us to handle your order". Oh, that won't work... That means you must deceive people to get the order. Ethics? I won't define that one. I'm sure you need to sleep.

I think it would be a benefit to all REAL FLORISTS if customers placed all of their orders directly with the florist that would deliver the product. Will that ever happen? Probably not. It's like trying to stop crime permanently. Impossible when there is easy money to be made with just a little knowledge.

Spoke with an 89 year old woman from Connecticut yesterday, who was ordering flowers for her daughter in a neighboring town. After asking how she got our phone #, she said she called her daughter to ask for a local florist because she wanted to cut out the middleman. I know, it's not much, but if a sweet little old lady can change her thinking .... I take a little comfort in it.

hang in there!

You got to be kidding...We've VERY busy, and most of the orders are from people finding us on the internet. A LOCAL florist needs to have an internet presence. LOTS of people are bypassing the order gatherers. Most of our new customers don't live in our town, let alone our state.

Would write more, but have to get into work. (It's 6:45 AM) Just looked at our website, and 9 new orders came in after we closed last night, and are awaiting us in the store this morning.

AMEN! We've had a web presence for quite a while but this year it was written down and underlined by our customers that e-commerce is necessary. Calls are up, internet orders are through the roof. We've become so busy with direct shop orders that if I sell a mere two dozen roses today, I will have sold as many as we did on Valentine's Day!! This Mother's Day has given me a whole new definition of 'Shock and Awe'.

Not slow here...but some early numbers

INcomings Down about 14%...no biggy
OUTgoings Down about 12%...again no biggy

Internet orders up 157%

Tells me, more and more folks are by-passing the middleman :)

At our shop, usually the Friday before Mother's Day is a hugh day for orders to be placed. It's busy before that Friday, but not nearly as busy. This has been an incredibly busy week already.

Just got home (can't bend anymore) finished prom corsages still have bouts to do in the a.m. and one top hat ringed with white minis...but we got slammed today. Direct orders c/c machine is hot!! Turned off the merc, sorry, had to. All we were getting in were 800F and .com for specifics once I saw that at 8:30 a.m., turned it off. I'm amazed that the other shop on our street is closed at 4:00??? Sheesh, I would love to know how to do that. Wholesalers came today with perfect product, lots of it...loaded us up and will be back tomorrow. Having a white zin and off to la la land I hope to get up real early to get going again. Glad to see very few online ... hoping you're all very busy !!

Thanks Tracy. We hear this a lot. I think most customers would love to shop locally and do. One of the problems they convey to me is deceit. They THINK they are dealing with a local business when they are not.

On the positive, you are doing it right when you come recommended by the daughter. She will use you when she needs/wants flowers and now mom will too. I love word-of-mouth.

We're commited to hangin' in there!

Jason - the model has changed.

You have a telephone and a web site - you're an order gatherer.

Period.

If you don't at least gather your own orders - someone else will do it. Put a few hundred or thousand hours into working the web and you'll realize, that people want convenience. Not to offend, but if you don't have a stronger web presence with a functional ecommerce site - you are barking at the moon wishin and a hopin that others didn't.

opinions vary.....

blessings for a good MD

New web site this year....Extremely busy and getting many orders.
In store we are full staff going crazy. IT's 4 am Sat morning...24 hours straight going on 38....Right through sat. night. All my orders are now wrapped. taking care of loose ends, getting my first load fro my delivery people.... then we are off to the races for another day.

There is something rather fortifying in walking the dog at dawn, watching the sun come up, inhaling the fleeting and heady scent of lilacs before I head to the flower shop. It's all good. Enjoy the day and happy Mother's Day to all the great Moms out there. :)

Is....it....over....yet? Busy as all get-out here. And funerals on top of it all. Now comes the "Sure we can deliver on Mothers Day! By "Special Currier" (aka You're an IDIOT) delivery charge of $19.95. The "Special Currier" being me. If I have to work on MD, you gotta pay.

Best of $$ & luck to all!!

Uhh...not quite...

You have a telephone and a web site and you make and deliver your product, your a local business.

You have a telephone and a web site and SKIM 20% + rebate from the order, then send to some foolish florist to make the product and deliver it, your a scummy order gatherer.

<...whew...guess I had a little too much coffee this morning...>

Whew...glad thats over for another year....

And who said things were slow...we ended the week up 19.3% over the MD week last year...

Down in only two catagories, wire ins, and hours in the design department. Store wide, overall 18 less man hours worked, including sales and design. We were up in delivery hours...but thats ok with me.

Hope you all did well too....I'm a happy camper.

Pretty happy - deliveries were down by 7 and total orders taken down by 3, but with the phones down on Thursday I think we made out alright. Very few flowers left in the cooler - that's a great feeling :)

We're still at it - this is my lunch break at 4 PM. Last runs getting loaded and filling orders for tomorrow pick-ups and deliveries.

Not sure yet if it was Mexican Mother's Day falling this week, advertising or a combo of both but we outsold all of MD 2005 yesterday so today and tomorrow are are 'get ahead'.

One question: Why, when you're at the absolute busiest, do customers feel the need to launch into the life's history of their Mothers? No doubt I'd be more fascinated most any other day of the year.....

I'm grinning here Cathy, because I can relate to that so very well. I've been told it's because I'm "approachable". Apparently that must be the case, because I've heard things most people wouldn't tell their shrink!!!.

Way to go for being "approachable".

To be honest, it has been a lovely Mother's week for me. I've filled in at the flower shop so there has been no pressure... I'm grateful. It occured to me today, this is the first Mother's Day where I haven't been stressed out or exhausted... oh, and the gift baskets sold really well too. :)

Tomorrow morning I do have to go in to the store to build "pastry" baskets for Moms... but that's ok. They are preordered, preplanned and a breeze to build. Then I spend the day doing what I like, taking the dog to the off-leash park and then having dinner with the best gift of all... my daughter. Life is good.

I was concerned up until Friday. Now with Fri and Sat in the books, for 6 days, up 18.1%.

Website up orders up 107.6%

I do the phones on Fri & Sat and I was pleased to hear so many people say, "I'm looking at your website right now."

My biggest challenge? Employees! An employee clocks in at 7:05 am, the phones are ringing and I'm doing all I can to keep up. When I asked her, "What's with letting the phones ring?", she replied, "Well, we don't open until 8 am." STUPID. I wish she was not retlated and one who really needs this job or she would be soon gone. That's my rant.

Too tired to do numbers. We got slammed on Friday. One of the best cash/credit card Mother's Days in about 4 years. Ran out of flowers by 1 Friday, luckily wholesalers had refreshed on Friday a.m with great product and even stopped by today with more. We actually only had about 15 people call for orders today that we just couldn't even think of trying to fill but offered Monday delivery (only two takers). Delivery girl had the worst time in our two neighboring towns, very frustrating. One .com order that we had to use second choice "similar design fill to value" says very upset, wants us to go back 12 miles, pick up and re deliver as first choice. Operator was upset when I told her to come here, drive the 12 miles and do it herself if she can get the flowers. Needless to say, cancel came through when I booted up the pc. Gee, the lovely recipient just oohed and ahhed. Everyone picked up for prom hooray! Still working on plans to move back to my house after 20 years on the main street. Exhausted, pleased with most everything, watching the Darlington NASCAR race and then off to bed. Gotta go blow up balloons at 9 a.m. for the Elks club Mother's Day Tea and deliver a couple of things to cemetery. Hope everyone had a profitable day.
BTW...FTD will get my request for termination before their June deadline. All done arguing with .com about their lack of insight into a small town florist and all the workings of one.
