Today I had a survey in my email on the wholesale prices of flowers....

Maybe we will be seeing a raise in prices in the very near future, maybe now enough florists have voiced that they cannot fill these arrangements and make money....maybe they are tired of getting complaints and hearing that is was filled to value to the best of their ability....or maybe it was just to get us to feel listened to...

Anyone else see this survey?

yes, got that one late last night.

not holding my breath tho

I got it too, but I wonder if its not that they are listening to the florists rather realizing that enough of the orders that are being gathered are not being filled due to unrealistic pricing. I'll bet it's from pressure from OGs.

Inferno, as far as the people who coordinate the survey are aware, there's no 'angle' on this one. :) In the opening of the survey, they said "We would like your input on what prices you pay for wholesale flowers so that we may more accurately price new designs in our Floral Selection Guide." That's pretty much the gist of it. I'll see if we can't share some of the results when it's done.

Floral selection guides will be a thing of the past in a couple of years, because I'll make sure credibility is brought to our industry.

/laughs at the substitution clause

Does it really matter what TF prices are? OG's just send whatever tiny amount they want anyway. Prices are all over the board from one TF website to another. ( I know, shops can set them, but do they?)TF sells wholesale flowers to right?

Teleflora does "wholesale " flowers through Stems and Bunches but I have found their prices to be way higher than my local wholesalers. That's why I don't understand where they get the prices for the holiday specials or anything else. Do they think we have a double mark up or something?

Lori... Got it today.

From my point of view, the BIG issue is delivery charges. TFTD800 includes $7 in the product price. That means we get $5 NET for a delivery. That is nowhere near enough. Our average delivery charge is $10, and that seems to be about right for this area.

I complained to a WS veep about this a couple of years ago. He retorted that the AVERAGE delivery charge in the US is $7.

Figures don't lie. But liars figure. Most florists are in small communities, where delivery charges are generally low. But most SALES Dollars are in metropolitan areas where delivery costs are MUCH higher.

All they (TF) have to do is remove the delivery charge from the discountable amount, and a LOT of my angst will go away.

What say the rest of you?

Bill

Well, regarding the surveys for wholesale pricing.......FILL THOSE OUT AND SEND THEM IN.

Carol Caggiano told me once......while she was on the TF team,.....that sometimes the prices in the workbooks are way off because what they do is they AVERAGE out the wholesale cost of flowers from those surveys.

Take a carnation for example..........one place pays .45, another .25, another .48, another .58 - so, we have .45+.25+.48+.58 = 1.76 - 1.76 divided by 4 = .44

The book would then list 44 cents as the wholesale cost.

Betting that since 800FTD are both doing flowers wholesale, TF is curious to see why their stems and bunches program is in the cellar.

Stems and Bunches is selling to the florist only and having to compete with other bulk sellers and their pricing. Stems and Bunches also only sells in larger quantities, many of the smaller shops cannot handle that much product, especially during the slower summer months. Also, if you need wedding flowers specific colors are needed and that option can be limited, for the most part we have been pleased with the quality of their product.

As far as pricing out arrangements for wire orders, you can get enough to cover the flowers and your markup but not get enough to cover labor charges, that and the % you lose to the OGs, gets pretty sad.

I think everyone needs to remeber that 10% of your sales is suppose to be your profit.

If your giving 27% to teleflora there goes your profit and that remaing 17% is coming from where?

That is exactly what I told them at the end of the survey....I let them know that if 80% of their orders go to the big markets they need to stop averageing and make sure the people in the places their orders are going get enough monney for the product....and let the middle of the country get more than they need at least everyone is then happy...

Ponderous thought, but perhaps they should be working on RETAIL PRICES rather than wholesale... when they work with wholesale prices, and when they determine the pricing in the selection guide based on wholesale costs, they in turn tell you how much they are going to allow you to make in profit.

Yeah, your right about the 'profit' they tell you you will make........but that's ONLY, ONLY if you buy a full case of 48.......and follow their recipe down to the tee. However, if you've noticed, when it come down to tiny things like greens......they forget to put a number down ( take fir for instance - You never see a number on how MUCH to use )

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I realize 'OPINIONS VARY' - but this is one more nail in the WS coffin for those shops that just do not stick to the outmoded business models of following the WS game.

Floral Selection Guides SHOULD be made a thing of the past. I see enough of those things in shops I visit to build a fort with! (most collecting dust, and not used) I don't think the w/s will do away with them tho, it's great revenue for them. Bloomnet came out with one in spring '07, charged $300 and it was mandatory, no returns allowed. Multiply that by each 1000 members!! BTW, that is due to happen next spring again.

I see many orders coming from Teleflora Headquarters, they're not going to willingly give up that percentage they make on sending those orders, I wouldn't expect any changes in that department any time soon. If we sent out an order for every order we got in, we could at least try to break even, and don't tell me to become an OG either, that stinks. I don't like anyone taking our orders, not going to take theirs.
