amongst everything else, Sandie and I have been entrusted to send out the registartion packages for The Ontario Florists Conference 2003, and are TRYING very hard, to alter and update our mailing lists, and cannot keep up!!
The return rate, as of yesterday, is 0.7 for every 10 we send out, in other words, for every 100 we send out , 7 come back as undeliverable, because, in the majority of cases, the shop has gone out of business!!
I've spent countless hours, cross referencing WS listings, and YP business listings, trying to update the mailing lists, and I LITERALLY cannot keep up.
So far, even the YP listings are proving incorrect, as they list shops, addresses, and locations, that since last printing, have disappeared, and the logistics are frightening.
It appears, that the flower biz "shakedown" continues, as the consumer continues to turn to the big box, multi function multi stores and food centres.
Even my own customers, have openly admitted impulse buying at many places other than MY shop, and though not any kind of surprise to us, this trend is driving undercapitalized florist/gift shops out of business!!
Toronto is hard hit...but, not alone,SARS obviously a big contributor, a lot of shops are taking major hits, and are now on the endangered species list....based on my mailings....

Very true ... many established shops are being forced to consider packing it in, as landlords increase rent and sales are reduced.

Normally, we'd be in the market to acquire some, but the cash flow this year isn't nearly what it has been in the past. Sales are steady, but we've focused on reno work on our building the past couple years.

Shocking Mailing Stats . . .

As the assistant (unofficial) to the Secretary/Treasurer of the Alabama State Florists' Association (my wife) I have seen this trend increase over the last few years. Everytime we do a mail-out (at least 8 times/yr) we update our lists by changing or removing approx 8-15 shops from our list. Makes your head spin :spin Our typical mailout is to 725 shops.
BUT, the good news is that we have not had any active members go out of business for reasons other than retiring or health.
Shops who are consistently, actively trying to stay informed and learn and improve are the ones who will survive.
Bottom line. . .

STAY INVOLVED AND ACTIVE IN YOUR LOCAL ASSOCIATIONS

Yikes!

Faxed in our stuff to Janet yesterday, looking forward to seeing everyone.

Hi there:

If there's any mailing help you need Mike, let me know. I agree address's are hard, hard things to keep up on, I've found when doing mailings you can send something out only to come back with Canada Post saying incorrect postal code or business has moved, in some cases, moved down the street two doors, and the stupid Post office won't use any effort to figure out, oh it's two doors down and put it in the box etc, and in the case of the postal code, you have the right code the shop gives you, and then it's wrong, you then look it up in the postal directory, and it's the same!!!!!!

Peter, if you have your own updated mailing lists, I'd like a copy please...I'm sure that many shops were missed under our radar!!
