TODAY...FOUR different customers in a row, came in to "TELEFLORA" orders out of town!!
have NEVER had that happen before, and it REALLY DOES prove, that TF is wayyy ahead of FTD in consumer awareness...in CANADA at least!!
YOUHOO...."Ireland" AND "Oldtimer".....good job!!
Mike

interesting thing around here, customers come in and ask "are you an FTD shop?" I say yes, they want to look at pictures, I show them the table with the FTD book and the TF book sitting on it. 99% of the time they flip through the FTD book, then close it, go to the TF book and order something out of it. I even tried taking the TF book off of the counter to see if it would make a difference. The customers would look at the book, close it and order a "designers choice".

Well sadly the better of the two (FTD) doesn't promote itself in Canada enough, and has let Teleflora have Canada. It's truly sad to see this occur. Teleflora doesn't give a **** about Canada in the big picture of things, and Canadian Florists don't give a crap either so it seems or if they did they would be telling Teleflora to take a walk, there's lots of Canadian shops here who care, but the majority seem to walk blindly in the dark paying stupid high monthly fee's.

It's got nothing to do with the dove or other sending devices, it's called not moving out of their comfort zones, lots of shops in the US have joined another W.S. who decided to pay less, and they HAVE NO Dove like system yet or online order system, and simply FAX the orders to them, and no dishware etc, but by God convince Florists in Canada of the same thing, and you might as well scream down a tunnel, and the funny thing in the US this other wire service still CHARGES more than BN does, and the Florists seem to want to PAY MORE MONEY. What is up with that?
Plus the founder of this other W.S. goes around openly printing on paper he's the founder of Redbook, when he's not.

Personally I'm tired of banging my **** head against the wall.

Name brand for one thing, but they are starting to let Teleflora build their name brand, FLORISTS NEED TO build their own brand name in their own markets, not the Wire service brand name, who cares what the company is, long as the flowers or gift arrives in well designed manner for the dollar value sent. Most of the time you say FTD, people have some clue what that is or at least it means flowers, but since Florists don't have any power at FTD now, and Investment bankers do, they want Direct to consumer sales, which is wrong, FTD needs to get back to what made them FTD and stop fooling around with OG's and Direct to consumer sales and work for the Florists.

Interesting enough thou, how much did Teleflora have from their consumer business? Since Teleflora isn't a public company, they don't tell you any of this. Teleflora is just one little company which is part of a much bigger company. Teleflora doesn't even have a Convention where members can get together, unless you're talking about the BIG senders hoildays, where most Teleflora members don't even know about exists.

If I was in the retail end of things, my second choice would be FTD, even with some of the bad things they are doing, they still are better than the other one, least in my opinion. They (FTD) needs to work on customer member service, and get rid of the OG's and get some real Florist types who have a clue about a shop to understand the complex nature of the business, sell off the stupid card division, promote the hoilday products better in North America and go back to putting Merlin on tv with everyday branded products like the old Pick me Up arrangements. The only reason Teleflora has got to be as large as they are is simply because they have bought everyone else.

Interesting take on FTD -

Peter, I don't believe FTD will ever 'get back' to where they were. Why was FTD sold by it's members in the first place? Because competition was tough and they weren't making the profits they needed - there was concern regarding the ability to pay the equity owed members.

Many members of FTD, a company of which each owned a small piece, sent their orders via other wire services to get the rebates offered elsewhere. If the rebates had never come along, I wager to say the florists would still probably own it. Over the years, we retail florists have made some pretty poor decisions which have earned short term gains with serious long-term losses, IMHO.

Why would any company spend money buying FTD and then run it like 'the old days.' That model showed a steady decline. To continue the path would have been foolish.

FTD won't get rid of the OG's - They ARE THE OG, now which represents almost half of their revenue! They are selling bouquets direct to some mass marketers and home improvement centers - complete with the FTD logo on each bouquet.

FTD is the ONLY wire service with a booth at Superfloral in Salt Lake City this week - the trade fare for mass marketers.

Peter, Merlin's not coming back and FTD isn't getting rid of the direct selling or order gathering.

Do you really find them the best choice 'as is'? No disrespect here, just not following your logic...

Maine USA........95% of orders taken through looking at the book, Teleflora wins ! Even those FTD heros say that their book is progressive, Customer friendly.....get real. At least Teleflora shows designs with flowers with style. Not "plunked into a vase"
I can always give a second choice of "style, colors". Can't do that with most of FTD's book choices.
BTW, loved Merlin, he sold much more than a "wild child" IMHO

Peter,

REALLY not following your logic on FTD being the better option. As I've said before, TF has the better customer service in Canada, has an office in Canada, has reps that know their customers personally, has more effective advertising that sends shoppers into shops (100% sales) and has BETTER brand recognition amongst those UNDER 40 years old.

I can honestly say, the ONLY people who mention FTD to me by name are over 50+. TF has the better selection guide, better transmission system (Dove) and solid tech support for their POS systems.

FTD pulled out of Canada, gave us Italo's cousin to run the ship here (Frank's a good guy, with no support from HQ), has a crappy selection guide, bad advertising, and IS the biggest order gatherer, and their tech support (IMHO) sucks. And their fees are higher, in Toronto.

No contest, in my mind.

couldn't have said it better myself!!!!!!!!!! i am out of FTD as of August. So if anyone would like their crappy selection guide they are welcome to it.. price negoticable... We have tried to use it and customers ask please if there is something else so out comes the GOOD OLE TELEFLORA BOOK. WORKS every time.Joanne
