Hi - I want to become a florist and open a floristry business. All I have is a passion and 12 months back supply of F&WB magazine, which has inspired me even more and recommended this forum! I'd really appreciate views and thoughts from existing florists to help me on my journey. I have 20 years experience as a sales and marketing consultant, and lots of experience in retail and design, but I now want to spend the rest of my working life doing something I feel totally committed to and am interested in, and earning a living at the same time. I hope that I can contribute sales and marketing ideas to other florists, and eventually I hope to operate from a commercial building.

Hello Susan! Thank you for your inquiry to our florist forum. Just to clarify, you are saying that you are not currently involved in the floral community? Since you mentioned Flowers& magazine it seems like you might currently be working for a florist?

Thank you for your answers.

Hi Susan,

Thanks for your interest in our community! If you are looking for some education, you might want to check out Ubloom. Hopefully, some of our UK members will be along to recommend schools in your area. I am not sure if this is the right forum for you, as it is a forum for professional and established florists. I am not opposed to your membership, but others may be. Best of luck to you!

anyone can subscribe to the trade magazines.

I believe I'll leave this one to our Brit members.

Susan has contacted me today as she wants to make her change of career a success and being business orientated knows it's going to take more than just a love of flowers.

Yes she does subscribe to the magazine and apparently has done for several months in order to get a feel for the industry. And I have to be honest and say that if enthusiasm, common sense and realism were rules to accept someone then, based on her letter to me today, I would have to give her my vote given there are many 'proper' florists out there who couldn't give a darn, don't research anything and have less enthusiasm in thier whole body than this lady appears to have in her little finger.

That said she is not a florist, does not work in one and therefore, technically is not allowed on this board which in some ways I think is a great shame on the basis I'd like to help someone who appears to be determined and who, if she gets in right, could be a good ambassador for floristry.

Sometimes rules have to be broken and gambles taken so I am going to abstain from voting as I really find this a tricky one.

I really like the sound of Susan i have to say. The only concern i have is that if there is a posting UK member from York it may not be fair on them. And if one person comes in who is not involved in floristry yet, then another would have to be invited.

Also there is no way of verification??

Susan it is nothing personal at all, i think you may be better to get yourself working at a florist and then come back to the board. I definately think you sound like someone we could all share with.

Just my two pence worth. :)

If you are looking for training Askam Bryan College do Floristry courses and good ones too apparently. (Don't do the flower arranging course - thats different). I'm presuming you are already in York. I personally don't have any great issue with Susan joining but maybe we should ask the York member their thoughts to make it fair.
