WebCPA, an online E-magazine devoted to matters of interest to Certified Public Accountants, or CPAs, has picked up the story about OGs not paying sales tax. The November 4, 2008 edition has a short front page story about lost sales tax revenue in North carolina.

Here is the link. http://www.webcpa.com/article.cfm?articleid=29738

This worldwide coverage will hopefully have two consequences:
  1. It will alert financial authorities nationwide to the illegal OG activities that are costing millions of dollars in lost revenues.
  2. It will inspire fellow florists -- and florist groups -- to start publicizion this illegal activity in their own areas.
Cheers!

Bill...the "taxing" authorities view this industry as one big "canvas"....please be careful what you ask for

As of today, I do not live in the People's Republic of North Carolina.
(That may change over the next 24 hours ;-) )

The problem that we are experiencing with the OGs is not due to an excessive use of "canvas" on the part of the tax authorities. Instead, it is the authorities' apparently total indifference to these lawbreakers.

And that indifference is reflected in the lack of action, if not words, among most of my nations Florists.

I can't speak about Canada, eh!

Bill

Canada here - eh!

I did some research on a few of the OGs in our local phone book and online. The same thing is happening here, and I have initiated action with our Provincial government, using the NC issue as a basis of the complaint.

I have not yet had any responses, but I will continue to pursue the issue. With any luck we will get somewhere soon.

hello, a small voice here but you can bet that Tom Meola never ever paid one red cent to the State of Maine although he advertised as being "Millinocket Florist" for at least two years before I shut him down.
Our state legislators never recognized a problem with that at that time, but I dang well bet that in this day and age (loss of jobs, unemployment, lack of tax revenue, etc) that they will certainly listen now.

Quick update on the Canadian side. Got an email back today.

Dear Mr. McLennan:

On behalf of The Honourable Gary Doer, Premier of Manitoba, I would like to thank you for your recent e-mail regarding your wife’s business.

We have taken the liberty of forwarding a copy of your correspondence to the Honourable Greg Selinger, Minister of Finance, for his consideration and response.

Once again, thank you for sharing your concerns with Premier Doer.

Sincerely,

Judith Baldwin
Coordinator of the
Premier’s Secretariat

How did you do that Rhonda?

Do you also have All American Flowers & Gifts doing the same thing?

And was Meola replaced by Best Floral like has happened out here?

Absolutely not, unless she chooses to.

Those two I mentioned may not claim to be in millnocket but they do claim to be Corvallis Florists.

I'd really like to know how she shut him down.

I think Meola just finally self destructed, greed got him and karma finally (15 years?) took its course. All the little "victories" (judgements etc) added up to the total deal, but damm that took forever and - I don't have another 15 years.

SO - I GOT A LISTING CALLED CORVALLIS FLORIST!!!!!

But until we're the last man standing - those deceptive bastards will still deceive and they will still get their orders filled.

I made sure his false telephone listing of Millinocket Florist with an 800 number in my phone book was disconnected. I called them and spoke with him personally once (total of 4 calls). When I spoke with him, I gave him my attorney's phone number who was initiating a suit for the false listing. This was 4 years before the State of Maine enacted a false listing law (which they don't follow up on of course).

On another post, someone mentioned flowers by Sears. I did a quick check in the Yellowpages, online and in print, and they advertise in Manitoba, to Manitobans. I managed to do a dummy order run through, and get a total with tax, and they are not charging Provincial Sales tax even though I ordered from Manitoba - to Manitoba.

I can't believe a national brand like Sears would screw up that badly as far as collecting tax. They should add to their marketing:

"Order flowers from us and save the 7%, because we don't charge you PST!"

Filthy entrepreneurs is one thing, but a national brand like Sears?
