I really enjoyed the show at Hunter Gallery yesterday. It is the one thing Teleflora does well and it only costs me $5 more to attend since I'm not a member. It's always inspiring to see a talented designer at work. What annoys me is having two florists in front of me chatting the whole time and not paying attention. Also, why is it at every show some so called professional florist wants to know "How would you price that arrangement?" First of all the designer is using donated flowers and has no idea what they cost. Secondly, shouldn't we know what we need to charge for things in our own shops? But other than that it was a good show. :)

That is exactly the reason they cannot tell you how they would price it...Usually florists ask that because an actual price on it would automatically tell them that they could or could not sell it in thier minds...they have little realization that these designers come from differnt areas of the country and some don't even have a regular retail store, their pricing structures go by their overhead...I missed the program yesterday, I am glad it was good...Was John Hosek entertaining or what, i have seen a program by him and he is very dynamic and charismatic...

That pricing question always gets me giggling. As said, most pricing varies so much between shops and containers can be subbed lots of times to get the same "look"........ but usually I find it's employees not owners who ask that question which makes me wonder how do they price their work or is it all recipe??

I roll my eyes at the "what would you price that at" question too. The answer needs to be "I'd price it according to my shops mark up. And you should price it that way as well."

I also roll my eyes at the "We can't sell that in my town/shop." What-eva

Yes that's a definate eye roll question. I alwyas wonder why someone like that bothers to go to a design show if they are not open to new ideas.

amen sister!
The other people who make me wanna smack 'em are the ladies who sit in the front row with their arms folded and glaring at the presenter, just waiting for the presenter to "mess up".

When I've done shows I try to entertain as well as inform, usually that wins 'em over,
We've all seen them.

I went to a show on Sunday. One woman was SOOOOO ticked because there aren't any greens in the designs anymore, she actually asked the presenter in a very accusatory way, "When will they start using greens again?".

I had to bite my tongue

yeah, I used to chime in- But not anymore. I just keep my mouth shut.

I remember a few years back at a show the presentor would ask a question and no one would answer- so of course I would....I didn't want him to hear crickets! But it was weird that no one would speak up.

Then right before lunch he tells the audience (there had to be 80-100 people there) "Feel free to to come up to me and ask any questions...OR go ask that lady-" he points to me- "She's smart- she knows a lot!" HA! so funny!
We actually had to leave after we ate and he came up to me to actually meet me and was disappointed we were leaving. Super funny guy and a good designer too.

I so love going to design shows. I'm going to see Tim Farrell next month. I don't know if I've ever seen him before. I hope it's good.

We hosted Tim Farrell last month in Spokane. He is very talented and a nice down to earth man.... Really enjoyed it!

Have fun Shannon.

Sorry I missed the Spokane show, would've had a ride too, but just too much on my plate and I was starting to feel overwhelmed. Guess I'll miss the big one in Portland that's coming up as well.

Keep your chin up, we are planning some shows for next year! Hope you will be able to make one of those....

Shannon, Tim is great very dynamic, but soft spoken and down to Earth..He heads up the team for the Academy Awards flowers...

As for I can't sell that in my shop...funny story...

I had a presentation last month with the garden club(mostley older women 60 plus with a few 40 plus) So I did some door charms, specifically to sell to older apartment living women who feel a regular wreath is to big or too difficult to store....I made them on a base of a hanging stro fall leaf, ones you buy to hang in shop windows...I did a couple very traditional, because of the age of many of the folks, Then I did one with aqua wire, orange monarch butterflies, peacock feathers and lime green ribbon accents...just to show a different palette for fall to show people that fall doesn't have to be all about orange and rust(my program was all on collors of fall)...Well I have sold 10 of those wire doorcharms all to the older women, I would have never imagined that that would be the one that these women would pick, but the did and told me it was because it was so different and people of all ages love butterflies, they really really do...so I anot really one to say that I can't sell it in my store, things may not sell well but as I show them, different, they are coming to me for different, people do want different...maybe not way out there different, but adding in one anthurium or one cymbidium orchid with other more traditional flowers will lead to two and eventually will become "normal" flowers to your customers...
