Decatur, AL also has Huntsville nearby to help. Huntsville is home to the Redstone Arsenal and the Marshall Space Center. High tech area.

Tuscaloosa, AL really has benefited from the Automotive sector and of course a winning football team, "Roll Tide". Approx 90 days till kick-off.

But. . . .shhhhh, don't let too many know about how great it is to live in Alabama. While we have our issues, I don't really want to live anywhere else.

That's amazing Clay.

I'm referring to the median house prices.

NOT ONE CITY HAD A MEDIAN PRICE OVER $200,000!!!

Albeit that I'm in Canada, and yes, the median price in my city of 350,000 people has decreased 10%...

...to around $500,000...

Ahhh but Preston did you get $600 from George Bush to offset the loss of value in your home???

I put in a swimming pool.

I put in a swimming pool.

We do get a tax break for renovations: 15% of certain renos $1,000+

I don't think swimming pools qualify tho ;)

BTW: the downturn in the economy doesn't seem to have affected house prices here much, and they are still selling...we plan to put up our house for sale right away. Thinking about moving to the Island. When we get there, I'll pop and see you prestonway. Where are you at?

Not so fortunate in our county...

"The average price of a single family home in Montgomery County was down from $302,400 in 4th quarter of 2008 to $285,400 in 1st quarter of 2009. The forecast for the second quarter if for prices to remain flat. It appears we have reached bottom."

Or perhaps I believe this guy...

Below are the statistics in Montgomery County during this month (May, 2009):

Average Sales Price: $315,671
One-Year Average Price Change: -6.3%
One-Year Change in Average Volume: -21.0%

Either way home prices are going DOWN.

Fortunately I'm not moving anywhere for the next 15-20 years, until I move to a tropical island and open my cabana bar.

I dunno - my friend Joe seems happy his home value is down.....

I think that must be a creative way of just being happy...(which I do not discount the importance of)

Like me saying business is UP 5% - from the 20% it was down.

PS - Dorothy _ i was kidding about the swimming pool - what I did was dig a hole and fill it with water from the hose with the $600.

Well, I don't know how housing prices in general are faring in my little state of South Carolina - but with the renovation.....My value went up......Hopefully, my Property Tax won't skyrocket.

I done forgot on this late Monday....which one is usually larger....median or average?

Median is the mid-point. Exactly half the houses sell for more...half for less.

Average is the total selling price of all homes, divided by the number of homes sold.

As an example, if you sold 5 homes for $100,000, 5 for $200,000, and 5 for $1,000,000, the median would be $200,000 and the average would be $433,333.
