I love FlowerChat. I’ve been wanting to post for a while, but it’s a little intimidating when I think about all the experienced designers and successful business minds here. I decided to just gather up some courage and do it.
In 2006, I set up a small home-based business. (I know, I know. But bear with me for a moment!) I got a tax number, I bought a cooler, and I started getting orders. It didn’t take long for me to learn this plan wasn’t going to work. It was way too much to handle by myself.
I also work full time in another field. I have nearly 19 years there. I would love to retire at the end of 20 and then work full time for a florist. I don’t know if this time-line is reasonable with the economic happenings lately. I’ll have to see how it works out, but that’s my dream.
In the meantime, I am taking floral design classes at a community college and have completed general principles, wedding, and sympathy flowers. This semester will be silk/dried. Our instructor is an AIFD and I have been begging her to join this community.
I plan to sit for the state professional florist exam in March. I hope to pass, but if I don’t it will be good experience and I’ll know more about what to work on. I joined the state association on a student status, and I have been to several ISFA sponsored hands-on classes and conferences.
Our class had the opportunity to work backstage with Els at the spring conference last year. That was a great experience! I got a stomach flu bug right in the middle of it, but I kept going. I wasn’t going to miss that opportunity unless I was dying! I did have to skip the dinner, tho :-(
This past fall, I worked Saturdays in a flower shop covering for a designer who was on maternity leave. I’m going to work for another florist Valentine’s week. And I am looking for regular Saturday hours in a flower shop.
Okay, as I look over this post I see I have talked a lot about myself, so that’s probably more than enough. Thanks again for being here every day and sharing this wealth of knowledge and support. I learn something new from you every day!
