We have been asked with about 50 other businesses to decorate a pre-lit xmas tree that will be on display at our local mall. Our name will be displayed by the tree.

We are trying to think of a theme for the tree. Some of our thoughts are...

Adirondack floral (because we live in the adks.) but other businesses are prob. going to be doing adk.

White points with red cardinals

red points with white doves

any other ideas??? Could use the help!! Really want to do something with florals.

Also, if we go with one of the points with the birds we would want to accent the tree with another color and can't decide of a color to do that with, any suggestions????

Quite a few suggestions.

For a more contemporary color scheme - Orange and Chartruese/ Other greens is a hot color combo right now. Also, Blues combined with browns/chocolates are really hot. Hot pinks and oranges are not quite as popular as they were.....but combined with green, they are still a viable color scheme. We are also seeing more purples this year than ever before.
In traditional color scheme - Combining multiple shades of red with emphaisi on the wine colors.
Also, Icey cool blues and whites are hot this year. And we are seeing a lot of black and white.

As far as overall themes - Angels were hot last year and will continue to be...but not cherubs.....the angels are grown up now. Snow, Ice and Snowmen is really popular but not overly cutesy.
Rather than an adirondak theme per se......Organics are the hottest trend. Using all natural material.
Opposite of the organic look......a lot of glitter and glitter patterns are hot - especially in contrasting colors.....red glitter on green glass for example.

Also, narrow, targeted specific themes are coming into their own - For instance....I saw the other day a red PVC tree with red lights and the decor was all candycane and peppermint.

This may give you some ideas to ponder - ALso, here are some sites that showcase what the hot colors are tight now.

The Color Marketing Group - http://www.colormarketing.org/ This group is the one that primarily determines what colors are in and out.

Also, Headed by Leatrice Eisman - The Pantone Color Insitute is a great source for color trends http://www.pantone.com/pages/pantone/index.aspx

The Trendcurve is another great resource for what is hot and coming. http://www.trendcurve.com/homepage.html

Christmas by Krebs is one of the leaders in determining what we see in Christmas in the marketplace - http://www.christmasbykrebs.com/about/index.asp - They are one of the largest designers and manufactureres of holiday product.

The SAF consumer website About Flowers has an entire section devoted to current holiday colors and trends - http://www.aboutflowers.com/holidays_b11.html

This should give you some information to work with.

I am loving the chocolate points and teal and copper ribbon with the peacock tail birds... it is really floating my boat....It is different and stylish... I also love the orange, copper and chatreuse... Love the candy whimsy look too. I did my whole store that last year. i felt like I was living in a gingerbread house...

I was in Vegas the Nov after 9/11. I still remember the awesome red, white and blue tree in a lobby. Can't remember which hotel, but I'll never forget that tree.

Carrieann, If you have access to the iron form for a Poinsettia tree I'd do that. When they are filled they're spectacular.

One other bit of advice - Goes along with what Eric S. said.

If you do this as a donation.....I would keep a cost of everything you put into that and discreetly post a retail price of said tree. If someone should want that tree or one similar, then you have the formula and recipe to duplicate for that customer.

Also, Since this is going to be displayed with other trees.....really put your creative imagination out there because you want to stand out and be noticed, not blend in with the others. Here are a couple of neat ideas for some different stand-out trees.

One of the prettiest tree designs I have ever seen was done for a similar showing.....and it wasn't a tree per se. The designers took a really full and lush pvc pine garland...used about three of them to get a nice height......attached it to a tall pole and heavy 1/4inch aluminum wire spiral......placed it into a large and ornate pedestal urn......and spiraled the garland into a tree shape......attaching it at various intervals to the wire form......then placed all the decor.....but you could see through the tree form and decor into an interior scene that was created in the center of the cone shape. It sounds kind of silly to phrase it like this....but you had what I would call a peek-a-boo tree. I am thinking of doing something similar to this for my church's Christ tree.....placing a Nativity scene in the center of the see-through tree.

Another idea that I did one year for my family tree...I got the idea from an old Christmas traditions magazine.......I come from a large family.....I took several cases of pvc pine stems.....stapled them around a series of plywood discs....and secured the discs to a central pole into a tree form ( I had painted the discs a nice green color to blend in.....but I took all the presents that would have been under the tree and stacked them into and on top of the plywood discs....so you almost had a tree made of presents......of course, al the normal tree decor went onto the pvs stems....I used a LOT of lights that time.

I have several trees up at my shop and I can tell you the one with the most attention so far is the Red, White and Blue. They all say how much they love it!!!

While I agree that a patriotic theme or possibly a yellow bow thing to homor our overseas troops would be a great comment generating idea......that brings one thing to top of mind that you will need to consider.

Has the facilty, host business or organization, or organzer given you any kind of stipulation, limitation, or any kind of pre-set conditions that may alter just how creative and unusual you could go?
