I can't believe my oldest kid applied at the UofI in hort program.

When queried, young Mioux told the elder Mioux that he got accepted into the Landscape Architecture program.

whew! I am glad he did not follow his grandfather, class of '42 in Orny Hort, or his dad, class of '82 (started in orny hort but wised up and finished in ag/business program but dumbed up later and fell back into the flower bus. ).

Seriously, uofi was one of my best experiences. Also, one of my hardest challenges.

When he told Anna and me that he got accepted I couldn't look at him. Anna was happy but she didn't understand my feelings.

We didn't tell Grandpa until Michael (aka young Mioux) could go into my office at work and show grandpa the acceptance letter. I had to turn away, because I kept whelling up with pride.

Now I just need to figure out how to pay for this sojourn.

Anyone know of any scholarships or grants?

Orny Hort sounds like something I studied back then too.

Congrats on the apple not falling far from the tree.

Joe,
Congratualations to Michael & to you & Anna for raising such a great Son!

I can hear your buttons popping all the way to Pennsylvania!

Talk to the school, and start with the usual Pell Grants, Etc. The Financial aid people do have some suggestions. Also, have Michael apply for every scholarship, aid package that he hears about or finds.

My niece is a Pitt graduate, and her brother will graduate from Point Park in May. Both of these kids were very very good at finding the most unusual scholarships, and aid packages ever. Brianne was determined to finish school without a heavy debt burden. Sometimes aid came in the form of $500. or $1000. at a time. But when you put it all together, it worked!!

Good luck to Michael! I look forward to hearing about his progress.

Cheryl

Congratulations to "Young Mioux" and his proud U of I alumni family. This industry is going to need the new generation to step up and help us branch out - so happy that you have such a leader in your family.

My eldest was a wiz at finding scholarships and grants. She said to advise you to google "college scholarship web sites" and start clicking. She said she got information overload at first, so start now and be prepared to chip away daily at all the possibilities. :loopy

Congrats Joe (Michael & Anna)!!!!! I was getting choked up just reading your post.

Since she was 3 my daughter, Marley, has said that she is going to U of I too (like many members of my family). She is now 10 and hasn't waivered (although her perspective major has changed several times, haha).

Good luck with the cash hunt!!!!

Congratulations to all of the Miouxes! Best wishes on locating the financing.

We were fortunate that Clemson U.'s financial aid department seeks out funding for their students. Our daughter received scholarships there which paid her tuition, books, housing, and spending money. Winthrop University, where she went for her freshman year, gave us the names of some websites and said, "Good luck." I'd be in touch with your son's financial aid office ASAP.

Cathy, you are correct.

This industry needs better trained people in the future. We as an industry are made up of too diverse backgrounds.

Whether Michael (actually Joseph Michael - grandpa is Joseph William - I am Joseph Gerard) stays with this curriculum remains to be seen.

Michael's brother Nick wants to be in landscaping and Jennifer wants to take over the shops.

Hopefully, Christina (age 8) will live out her life long dream and become a veteranirian (her pronunciation) ;)

I still remember me telling mom and dad I got accepted at the U of I in Orny Hort.

Mom looked at me with some disdain and said, "why would you want to this?!"

Wow, Joe, that is so awesome! You must be so proud!

You need to quickly, asap do your 2008 taxes. Then you need to go here and fill out a FAFSA:
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

After filling out the FAFSA, we got a package from WSU (where my daughter, future nurse practitioner, attends) of grants, parent and student loans we were eligible for. She also won 3 or 4 scholarships. Between all that, we covered the $20,000 annual cost.

I'm sorry I'm no help with horticultural scholarships, but I've heard there are sites online where you can search for scholarships. Do you belong to any professional organizations that might offer scholarships? What about locally too? Do your local Rotary, Lions, etc. clubs offer scholarships? You and/or your son might talk to his guidance counselor at school... they often know of appropriate scholarships to apply for. My union at work offered one, which Holly won. All those $500 and $1,000 add up.. they're worth applying for.

Good luck!

The problem with financial aid is that I own too much. A flower shop and greenhouses.

Small businesses are immediately place at a disadvantage. Even though we have assets, those assets are used to generate an income and we all know the compensation small florists earn.

When I attended, I paid my way through. I paid $15K and Mom and Dad kicked in an extra $2,500. Today, we are looking at $25K per year!

Believe me, that kid is going to be looking for every bit of "free" money that is available.

Welcome to the Big 10!!

There is money available you just have to find it.

check this out:
www.enotes.com/scholarships-loans/american-floral-scholarship

Your local HS should have information on locally provided scholarships.

I belong to the NASE. They offer $4000/year scholarships to college students.

and yes they can go to college and hold down a job. It just cuts into their social life :( :)
