My Dad grew oranges in Exeter CA. He went to well and drip lines back in the 80's drought. I do feel for the ones that drink from the canal. CA farmers are resourceful, they have been through this before. They usually section crops, which does drive up price a little. Thankfully the Navels should be finished by now.
We moved from Calif. almost 5 years ago now. I didn't realize they were having a drought. I'm not sorry we moved... the town I lived in got their water from the Delta... it was a mix of fresh and salt water, which grew saltier when there was a drought, due to salt water intrusion from the Pacific. So the drinking water there must be downright awful right about now! Yech!
I remember a bad drought in the 70s. At one time we were rationed to 28 gallons/day/person. You can barely shower with that, and toilet flushing wasn't done except when necessary. No car washing. No yard watering.
Hey, I never heard of the "state Board of Good and Agriculture".
Beth what town did you live in? I totally remember boating on the Delta canals, over 1000 miles of navigational boating ways! We used to boat there every year on July 4 right outside of Sacramento. There was a large lake were boats would dock together in long lines and party until the big firework show at 10. I miss that smell in the air of the valley and the delta waters. i sometimes miss California.
Thom, I lived in Pleasant Hill, Concord, Martinez. Pretty much my whole life. Except for 3 years that I lived in Connecticut! I lived in Ledyard, sort of near Mystic. And then there was 1 year in Springfield, Illinois.
Her name was Marion Arnold. She lived on a family apple orchard. She used to tell me stories of John Muir and how he would come to visit family there and would tell stories to all the children. My Grandma said she once sat on his knee!
