From time to time I read posts that sit well with me and sometimes not so well. While I might not agree, I do respect the opinions of all, that's what makes small business great. I also on several occasions since being on chat have read a post where my light bulb got a little brighter. About one month ago Mark (Boss) posted something only a few lines long, but it really ticked me off. What he said was right on the money, it was just something I didn't want to digest at the time. He said, "would you allow a store down the road to take an order, process payment and then send it to you?" I said, "No"..............but then realized I was really saying "yes". So that was "brewing" in me ever since then.

When I showed up to Lake Charles this weekend for my program, I found as usual a nice bunch of hard working people, who selfishly gave of their time to put on a floral convention. They only had 5 main stage shows, but done right. They we're ready for their people to come and learn. I saw a big hole in the corner, so I ask who pulled out on them. It was the black and gold people and that really put a hurting on the convention financially and did so only a few days in advance. They depend on the revenue from them (I know they shouldn't) but most do, so them not showing really frosted my pants. The mere fact that these people weren't good enough to be paid a visit because they only had 91 people. All of the booklets printed, so they got all the exposure with no commitment. At the main dinner, people we're very upset and you can guess the subject of conversation. So I made my decision as others did at dinner to say good bye to these people.

That's why I started the boot camps and use people like Ryan and others who are only sleeping with their spouses. I'm very passionate about the florist that I "teach" to, I want them to make more money. I've tripled my profits in the last 3 years while losing 35% of my sales (think on that one) and shooting for a higher goal. I began to run my business and now teach people that your/their income needs to be first and your sales need to be wrapped around that number, not the other way around. Same as tithing to your church, SBO's should do the same and be paid first.

In closing, thanks Mark and others, I will be sending my letter this week. I don't believe in bashing so I won't, only to say that social media can sniff this attitude a mile away and could be their eventual downfall.

Thanks to all.................:wallhead:

The irony and audacity is in the fact that many if not all of the 91 shops that showed up probably belong to that service.

Rick,

Did they just not send people, or did they cancel payment as well?

In my experience, these things have to be paid months in advance ... though it wouldn't be the first time a WS stiffed a florist conference (OFC 2003 comes to mind, right Mikey?).

The "black & gold" WS will probably feel the loss of your account more than the majority of accounts they loose in the near future. Good luck with the termination and resist the urge to capitulate when they attempt to persuade you to stay on.

Rick, you just about gave me a heart-attack, I thought you were leaving US!

Everybody has their "Come to Jesus" moment.....I guess 91 florists had one over the week-end. These are the type of things that get them working on their own businesses, what they should have been doing a long time ago. (Not you Rick, I know). It just seems that each one needs the straw that broke the camel's back to be fed up. Once they do, they immediately start working on how they are going to market themselves.

FTD is amazing......really not quite understanding their decision unless they already feel the boat has left the dock without them, so why invest the money. My gut feeling is that they are weening themselves off of the little guys, going to go with one or two fillers for every large metro area and ship the rest. Much more profitable and much less of a head-ache, especially after the Mother's Day fiasco with "Living Social". That had to have really hurt financially.

That is disgraceful - a total two's up to all the attendents of the event.
Over here we have small conferences that were set up buy Carries company and I'm sure that all the main OG attend and these are regional events, I think they have around a couple of hundred attending at a time. How do they expect there members to respect them and use the service if they can't give something back by attanding these type of events. Just another example of the big guys kicking the little guys in the nut's.
So glad you have decided to take the leap and go for it.

Nice one Rick. I was wondering when you'd leave them. Good to hear you did. And I was also worried you meant you were leaving here ;)

Word on the street is that membership is dropping at around 200 florists per month... not sure if that's a hard number. Of course some still join too...

wow even if its only 1/2 that number allowing for new sign ups.. thats huge!

I don't think that FTD are that bothered - the screwing around with the people at the show seems to support the lack of interest on the part of FTD. They've got certain florists but more importantly to them and their bottom-line, they've got their drop-ship. Now, if TF were loosing net 100+ a month, I hazard a guess that they would be concerned.

Seems to me, it supports their lack of ethics even more....

Not trying to defend anyone...but do you know for a fact or is it presumption that they pulled out because there was only 91 people attending?

That "these people weren't good enough to be paid a visit"?

Or is there another reason entirely as to why they were forced to pull out, which you may not know about?

That was the sentiment felt by most if not all attending. This association wasn't the only on one that weekend where they pulled out. It is a presumption that the attendance would have been the reason. When you have an empty hole, with the TF rep right next door and saying to everyone "thank you for being Teleflora" and admitting no new sales would be had this weekend, but this is something they are committed to, it makes people speculate. Grandma could have stubbed her toe or something serious and they couldn't make it......................

Thanks for clarifying that the first quote was a presumption.

Now for my second question.

So when you say "It was the black and gold people and that really put a hurting on the convention financially and did so only a few days in advance."

Are you saying that they didn't pay for their booth ahead of time?

Do you know for a fact that the convention is out the money?

Those we're the words of the person running the convention. Either way, which insult is worse. Paid, then not show or non-pay, not show up. In SC they we're a no show or "pull out" as they called it at the last minute (day before). Nothing was shipped, so they had no intention on going (IMO). When you're afraid to face the people (IMO) that's not good PR......
