Have a beach wedding next weekend. Using a simple birch arbor with a flower spray (sunflowers and daisies) fixed to each front corner. Couple is very organic. I need suggestions on affordable trailing greens for my vertical posts. Ivy and ruscus (IT) is not their look. I want something viney, asymetrical, unkept - OMG, I think I just described myself... Thanks!

I know here in the south, smilax vine grows wild and all we have to do is cut, Does your area or your suppliers stock or have smilax?

That would give you the feel you were wanting.

At Carbone's they have a really nice trailing mossy looking fern...I think it is called rainbow fern, not sure of the price tag, I bought it so it cant be too outrageous...it is more earthy crunchy and natural than other trailing stuff, but very dainty so it may not work for your application..

I have lots of over grown long grape vine in my yard if you need it for free....

Its a hike but may be well worth it...

Smilax in my area is $10 a stran. Too pricey for this event but I love the stuff. I'm liking the grapevine idea though.

You could also look into grape ivy plants,,, and cut em down...pretty cheap..

I know you said "organic", but Michaels, and probably wholesalers, has a cool clustery thing that almost looks like light green ruscus if it were an actual vine .... I've used it in with other fresh stuff and it looks very cool & natural. Just a thought. Lately I've been looking at artificial greenery as a mix in for projects like this.

Or fresh willow, with some of the leaves stripped off.
Or miscanthus grass.
If you can get large leaf ivy, that's very cool, not the perfect small leaf variety.

good luck!

I'm not familiar with what kind of greens you have growing in your area. I have a huge Nandina bush in front of my house. We've always called it "Heavenly Bamboo". On many occasions I have trimmed it and used it for the shop. It has a very "organic" look to it with the varigated color of the leaves and the almost berry type look of it's blooms. When mixed with other greens, (or not) I would think you could get away with with the look at little to no cost to you - if it is something that grows in your yard. You might also mix it with a bit of curly willow, bear grass and/or lirope. Obviously, just throwing out some ideas.

I love the idea of Nandina (it is one of my favorites this time of year as well).

Last week I got some great ninebark that would be a great texture (upside down).

Otherwise, take a hike and get some native grapevine with the leaves and mini grapes still on it...that would be gorgeous!!!

If you were a bit closer, you could have tons of yellow jasmine, honeysuckle, and ivy from my yard. I'd even throw in some of my treasured nandina. Come on down!

do you have autumn clematis by you? It grows like crazy around here and I have cut it in strand up to 8' to drap on arbors/chupahs etc.:)

How about using bittersweet with the foliage still on? There must be some around you...we have a house in West Yarmouth and there's tons of it vining on the trees....

I don't know what grows in your area and what you might have in your own yard but I recently did a 9 foot swag for an arbour and I used my own wysteria vine which was great and saved a lot of money. The swag was lush with peonies ,roses, and orchids. I was able to make it a bit fuller because I didn't have to buy the greens.
