My friend, also in the floral industry, is visiting NYC in August. She is very interested in visiting the floral district. Can anyone please tell me where it is and how she can get there? Thanks.
Our OLD flower market is located at West 28th Street and Avenue of the Americas.
Sadly, there's not much of it to see anymore as many Floral Wholesalers have now faded into oblivion.
NYC tried to convince many of them to make the move over to the Huntspoint Terminal Market in DA BRONX for easier access and available parking included with their FEE for ENTRANCE.
However, only one that I know of, was forced to do that.
Back in the 1970's, the NYC Flower Market was a HUSTLE and BUSTLE place with probably 60 or more wholesalers.
Now, you're lucky if you find 15 still doing business.
Marconi Flower Wholesale just closed their doors in June due to lack of interest by the children. Although, the children are quite comfortable owning the real estate rather than running a floral wholesale business.
The market never lent itself to convenient shopping since there is no place to park, other than a HIGH PRICED LOT.
My last PERSONAL VISIT was sometime back in 1975.
I parked my car out in front of Kiamos and Tooker and didn't get out in time to move it at 8:00 A.M..
Thinking it had been stolen, (instead of being Towed away like it was), I contacted the Police.
At 1:30 P.M., they told me where my car was towed to and it cost me over $100 back then to get it back in 1975. And, they only accepted CASH back then which required a call to my Brother-In-Law in Westchester so that, he could make the trip down to bring MEE dat cash.
Forget about their Towing and Ticket Fees today! You might be lucky if you get away under $300.00 as these are a CASH COW for NYC. Just better not to use your own car in NYC and use Taxi's or Public Transportation. Just going to a Broadway Show and having to park your car in one of the nearest parking lots cost you $25 to $30 for the three hours.
Anyway, that was my last PICK and SHOP trip to the NYC Flower Market for obvious reasons.
After that experience, I went to the telephone.
Anyway, and if she insists on a visit, tell her that, no more than one hour, is what she would want to schedule. And, before 8:00 A.M. since, after that, IT'S ALL OVER.
The NY Botanical Garden would be a nicer trip, although she could combine the NYC Flower Market with a trip down to China Town for dinner and Little Italy for desert.
For directions, she could email me at [email protected] while letting me know where she's staying and I will help her in planning her attack mode.
There's also a REALLY LOVELY RESTAURANT with a beautiful view of the East River and the City Skyline from the Queen's side. It's called THE WATER'S EDGE and they operate a FREE ferry service which leaves from Manhattan at East 34th Street. http://www.watersedgenyc.com/
Thank you for the info John. I will pass it along to her.
How sad that the district isn't what it used to be. I must admit some of the best fun I had was in the Paris floral district. I learned so much from the vendors there. I guess she was hoping to have the same experience in NYC.
