A few years ago, Phil did a care & handling and design video with the Hawaiian Tropical Flower Council. The group recently gave him permission to upload one of the 'how-to' segments to YouTube.

I finally got it uploaded this afternoon. :)

Phil demonstrates how to make a contemporary tropical design in a tall vase. The clip is fairly quick (about 5 minutes). http://youtube.com/watch?v=7Maz8cvnFZ8

This is one of the many reasons that I consider Phil to be a mentor. Watching his skill in floral design always spurs and encourages me to improve and aspire to greater heights.

Thank you for uploading this. I am in awe.....as I always am when watching phil create.

I think that Phil personifies a quote I heard one time.....I cannot remember the source and I cannot remember al of it, but the part I do recall is "....Create, like a god "

I can't think of who said it... but I've heard it as...

"Create Like God, Work Like a Slave, Rule Like a King"

.

The tropical design/care vidoe is one of my favorites! I bought his book (and the CD came with it) at the Seattle symposium..awsome awsome..

btw.. Phil was the presenter at the very first design show I went to.. I had JUST been hired only 6 months (or less?) before and i went EARLY and was watching him put some finishing touches on the designs and he turned to me and said "do you want to help?" I think he may have taken for granted that I knew some basics.. but I KNEW NOTHING!! thank goodness it was simple stuff...ha ha

Shirley asked me to tell you how much she enjoyed the film, thanks for posting it!

Thanks for posting that, Cathy...

I think that tropicals are one of those types of flowers that separate trained floral designers and floral arrangers. Here on the east coast so many florists do not know what to do with them. I was lucky enough to work for a wonderful guy, who worked in Fl for 20 years. He taught me how to work with tropicals and I am very glad I got this exposure. It helps diversify what I can offer to people that want something a little different.

Thanks for posting that video! Have long admired Phil's technique, wish I lived close enough for classes. I was fortunate enough to have been trained by a designer/shop owner that was amazing with tropicals. I'll never be as good as he was, but I value what I learned from him.

What an inspiration Phil is!

The first time I ever saw Phil and his work was at Southern Retail several years ago, before opening my own shop. I was awestruck by his designs, the likes of which I had never seen before. I was standing and looking at a design which included one of his famous birds. Having done extensive work in macrame', I was trying to figure out how it had been woven. Someone in passing stated that the directions were in Phil's book, but the books had been sold out. Phil happened to walk up, asking if I had any questions. When I asked about the bird, he turned around and brought 2 pieces of hala foliage, and promptly talked me through the making of the bird. When I mentioned that I wished I had arrived in time buy one of his books. "I believe that I have an extra copy." He located it and autographed it. He did not have to take that kind of time with a dumb little (???) woman, but he did. That is the kind of person that he is.

A few years ago, I was able to take a 3-day seminar which he taught. What an awe-inspring experience that was! Many from that seminar have gone on to achieve AIFD.

Cathy, thank you for sharing this video.

BTW, I have tried several time to register on YouTube, but have been unable to do so. Geez!
