Are any of you using Twitter as one of your social networking?

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send "updates"...

No. As with most of these things, I find myself asking "who cares". I guess you could tweet your "name game", if you do that, or an impromptu special. But throughout the day, I don't have that much to say to anyone, nor do I think most people care what's going on in the shop.

I have used twitter for a few months. I found it has longer staying power for me than Facebook does. Some people use Twitter to broadcast new blog posts, others will share interesting links ... it's a neat environment.

So far I have over 100 people following me - can't say why, but they seem to think it's worthwhile. I am following folks like Jennifer Laycock, Li Evans, Michael Gray, Todd Friesen, etc. Oh, can't forget Sugarrae :)

Twitter Useful, Depends...

It could be somewhat beneficial if for no other reason to announce your presence to the users of Twitter.

The usefulness of Twitter to your organization should subject to the same scrutiny as you afford other social media outlets in respect to your business: Do I have an audience there? Can I monetize the service in some way via targeted, increased traffic?

In the end, it is how you can use these type of services to further promote and/or 'brand' your business.

Good article here:

Updating manually could be cumbersome, but I can see benefits for keeping your information in front of the twitter Audience - as in all marketing, it will be how well you promote and present yourself.

API info for twitter is here. Wordpress users have several twitter plugins and tools available. (btw - Wordpress 2.5 is available for download now)

I think this could be a useful tool for promoting your business, but not by using manual updates - it's all about how creative you can be in using such services.

I've been following the developers list for quite some time and they have implemented lots of nice changes, including some large changes to the admin user interface for usability.

There have been some minor problems reported so far, but the Wordpress community is great and I'm sure they'll have fixes for most of these soon enough.

If you run a plain vanilla blog, you shouldn't have any problems, but be careful if you have done any major customizations to your blog or use a large number of plugins - you may experience some problems in those cases. I'm going to give them another couple of weeks to handle some bug fixes, then I'll make the upgrade. I have too much customization in place right now to make the jump just yet - but I'll get there.

Jared said that he was able to get all of my custom template Wordpress blogs updated, but he did mention that I am not utilizing a lot of their custom plug-in features at this point.

Sorry for the hi-jack of the thread.

No problem...

I'm interested in Wordpress also.

Plus, I think there are a number of FlowerChatters that use it.

Good information is always of value to our forum.

getting things back on topic

I've been using Twitter for about 3-4 months now and it really just depends how you use it.

I use it to follow my friends and other people in my industry. Its a great way to keep up with everything. Example: may of the new next gen 3G iphone rumors were broke through twitter before they were blogged about.

I really didn't start seeing what all the hype was about until I started using a third party app (I use Twitterrific) however. The app turns it into an IM-microblogging-status hybrid platform. All the updates from everyone I follow are sent straight to my desktop and from their I can reply or update my own status.

If you are toying around with Twitter I highly recommend checking out Twitterrific (if you are on OSX) or twhirl (for you XP/vista users). If you limit yourself to just the web interface you're never going to get much going...

Also, I haven't done any testing with this yet, but some people I know are using Twitter to kinda game the system and get a few backlinks.

twitterrific - http://iconfactory.com/software/twitterrific (OSX only)
twhirl - http://www.twhirl.org/ (xp/vista/osx)

If you are into tech a few good people to follow are Chris Pirillo, Kevin Rose, Micheal Arrington, Leo Laporte, Ryan Block, and of course Woot

cheers

Hey I am assuming that you can just follow whoever if you like their blog or site or whatever. Is that true or does there need to be at least some relationship like on facebook. (though that's pretty loose too, I have a lot of flowerchat friends I only "know" thru the site)

Wordpress a great blog platform - Twitter a great micro-blog platform

From what I read, people in general don't like reading a lot on a blog and is why I have been using Twitter, a micro blog, for about 8 months now. I think I was the first florist, I didn't find any when I first joined , so I took the name florist ( twitter.com/florist ) - A lot of people who posted here posted offered some great info and Jared said it best when he said, it depends how you use it. When i first heard about twitter a year ago on techcrunch, i was like... LAME. Why would I tell others what i was doing and why do I care what they are doing? BUT after I signed up I started using as a marketing tool and crowd sourcing. I've already post on the tech forum here about twitter and the best third party apps to use, just do a search if you care. We crowd sourced info and it was a success and have done competitions. When I tweet I always use key words like florist, flowers, chocolate, ashland, etc.. because it is post to my 'forever unfinished' website's front page. Having control of your customer base without them knowing is a great feeling when it comes time to advertise something.

I have had a twitter feed on my front page site for about 6 months now and the text is put into html so google's spider crawl it. I am nothing close to an SEO expert, but it won't hurt. People like seeing what's going on at the shop, join in on the competitions and it's a sweet way to crowd source info.

I predicted that twitter type mirco blogs will go niched too and not be so vast. For example, yammer.com won the techcrunch50 award and is a niche type twitter mico blog. With the poshcircle project I am working on, I will create a retail sales type micro blog.. for example it would be like twitter... customers will follow you and when you had a sale or event or w/e, you tweet about it. Customers who follow you get deals...but giving you the upper hand by controlling your customer base. poshcircle is all about a business controlling their customer base so when it comes time to market your sale, you know that 100% of your free adverting is going to your target market.

friendfeed is twitter's competition fyi. I was not the first florist there but got http://friendfeed.com/flowers

off subject-
I am not a big fan of Facebook since the only value facebook would have with me is keeping in contact with friends/family and that's what I try to avoid really. I predict Facebook would be chipped at by niche social networks over the years, such as a sports social networks, vegetarian social networks, florist social networks, etc.. because ones passion always trumps a 'super poke' or in other words hanging out virtually with friends who don;t share your same passions. The social network I am releasing tomorrow in Southern Oregon to test, www.poshcircle.com is a niche social network targeted towards event goers who enjoy fine food, drink, design, fashion, etc... - One day i hope to make us more unique by allowing the consumer to create the events that businesses have already Oked... there is a lot more to it, but I won't bore you. But if this happens.. I'll give you the power to know who is walking through your door next Sat at 3pm and know everything about them..giving you the upper hand on up-selling. But I have a lot of work to do first.

p.s. - I still think Twitter is Lame in general, but not for businesses. I follow a few friends who tell me what they are doing.. and think.. who cares.. and do you really think anyone cares if you just got up and made toast? - Information has to offer value... our valuable information is interesting to our target market(customers) ... my friends' target market is (someone who he thinks cares). I feel sorry for a lot of twitter people... no one really cares unless it's valuable to them.
