I'm sure it'll be spun round and round to make 1800 and McCann look wonderful, but it should be interesting viewing on Sunday evening.

And by the way, they sent a message via Bloomlink about the show. Yet another paper wasted. Have the Ws not heard of e-mail?

That was my thought too! Can't wait til the end of April when I kiss them goodbye for good. Curious though, how the show will go. Will they show him at a call center?, a shipping warehouse? Anyway, I plan to watch it.

Interesting article about Chris McCann from Daily Finance: Undercover Boss Chris McCann to Rearrange 1-800-Flowers

The piece contrasts Jim McCann's past real flower shop experience with his brother's number crunching approach to the company's operation.

I definitely won't miss tomorrow's show airing.

I guess we will see, but it would appear that the local florist will not be discussed or even mentioned, ya know, the ones who actually fulfill these orders. Not gonna miss it, just the same.

Hey, maybe I'll set up the flip vid to record my reactions!:boggles: Now that could be entertaining!

The show starts in a few minutes. In the mean time, read this critique from the NY Times.

It includes:
“Undercover Boss” is less an exposé than a showcase, and the chosen companies view it as an opportunity, not a reckoning. Chris McCann, president of 1-800-Flowers.com, who is the star of the season finale, uses it as a marketing tool, sending customers a “special offer” e-mail message. “See our president on ‘Undercover Boss’ — and shop his personal picks!”
These self-serving gambits annoy labor groups, including American Rights at Work, a nonprofit labor policy organization in Washington, which circulates labor complaints and employee lawsuits against the companies that CBS has crowned. (1-800-Flowers.com, for example, is currently fighting a sexual harassment suit by a former deputy general counsel and vice president.) The group also takes exception to the way each episode ends with a pageant of seigniorial largesse — a $1,000 gift certificate, a family vacation — instead of a commitment to fair wages and safe working conditions.
But it’s the humility of the workers, their genuine astonishment and thankfulness over small acts of benevolence, that is most striking. If nothing else, “Undercover Boss” is a reminder that in bad times, people are less eager to confront or provoke authority; mostly they wish for small favors and the big, serendipitous strokes of luck.
Serious food for thought.

It's food I've chewed on during the duration of this programme Cathy... and I often choke when swallowing.

Hi Dianne... there is another thread called Undercover Boss... :) So nice to see you!

Well, that was totally lame. It was a big PR commercial for 1800Flowers...trying to make them look like they're all about brick and mortar businesses and THE PEOPLE. We all know the bulk of their business is order gathering. They completely avoided it. Not that I'm surprised.

As I said at the outset of this thread... spin spin spin. ;)

It was, like most of these shows, a blatant free marketing device, no more no less.

I have no respect for either brother and the stupidity of the game play was playground behaviour.

My first thought when Dee was given an arrangement named for her... you're kidding me. That's all she gets for managing the busiest store in the chain? Sure, some of the proceeds go towards a scholarship programme, but hel l, she deserves far better.

Sandy, you're right... lame.

My Facebook post:
Chris McCann on Undercover Boss:

So you named a design after local store superstar Dee. Where's her raise for that outstanding job and her "Martha" licensing fees for every arrangement sold using her name? Marketing once again triumphs over taking care of the folks who have worked tirelessly to made your brand what it is.

Between the disrespectful sibling rivalry and the lip service, I'm going to be sick.

I took notes. Look for a blog post when my blood pressure levels out. Oy!

Glad I missed it...

Sound like what I was doing was more interesting.... splitting wood for next winter.... ah well....

What did we expect? Does the show have a FaceBook page? LOL

The store that was shown in Boston that wasn't doing much business was in my home town, Waban part of Newton. I walked by the space that housed the store every day as I walked to elementary school. I worked at a Deli that was and still is two doors over through high school. My friend owns a frame shop in the block of stores. The store was a dry cleaner forever. I thought and still think it's a horrible location for a florist. The store does look nice inside.
I don't believe they deliver from the two stores shown. I believe the arrangements come out of the Needham design center. Guess that's why they have 1 employee and not a lot of buzz. People come into my store and hear phone ringing. See orders being made and employees. Lots and lots of flowers.
The $100.00 bouquet of flowers looked undervalued and basic.
