I am helping a friend get up a website and begin to market online. I was wondering if anyone is using the UNIVERSAL BUSINESS LISTING I see advertised here on FC banner ads? Is this owned by Strider or someone we know or just a random ad? Inquiring minds and all that...:scooter:
It's hard to believe that anyone knows less about websites/online marketing than I , but alas it is true :hammer: Thanks

UBL is one of many companies that deals in mass quantities of business info... think infousa, elocallisting.com, etc... I actually met and spoke with a rep from UBL at SMX Local in San Francisco last year.

Part of the argument all of these companies make is that they have trusted relationships with the major search engines as data providers. If you ever wonder where all of the local Google Maps / LBC data comes from, it is sources like this.

They have established relationships with the major engines and the selling point is to ensure that your local listing information is 'consistent' across all of the search providers.

They (and other such companies) will claim that paying them to list your local business information will increase consistency across many of the local listing sites: Google Local, Yahoo Local, and many, many other smaller local listing sites across the internet.

I believe that UBL was a newcomer to the game last summer at the time they presented at SMX, but there were others that did the same thing. They make their money by licensing out their listing data to these local listing sites/providers.

If you've already made good progress claiming local with G, Y and Bing/MSN local , I'm uncertain how beneficial this would be. On the other hand, for $30 per year if they update hundreds of data providers with nothing more than a link to your website, that could generate traffic from sources you may not already get.

Check out their website, and click on the EVERYWHERE link to see the search providers that use their data. If you don't already have a presence on some of these sites, the backlinks may be useful if they are used. I think the main problem is that there is no 'guarantee' that their information will be considered authoritative and will be used everywhere as the search engines don't get data from a single source for LBC, they use LOTS.

Cathy may have some input, as she may have discussed some of these companies in her discussions with Mike Blumenthal regarding local search and Google LBC issues. He was also present at SMX Local last year and was on several panels with reps from UBL and other data providers.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Steve

UBL is highly recommended.

Google Maps cross-references data from YP sources, user input and major data providers. Those 3 major data providers - InfoUSA, Acxiom and iBegin - are the sources of much of the YP data and provide other directories with info.

Good local search ranking depends in part on having consistent info across all the sources. If you use UBL you're feeding the data once at the top of the stream and it filters all the way down.

OK... I'm onto it...but...

Category?? Retail I get, no listing (required) for florists or something close...what do you suggest?
Ok, so it will let you finish it without the secondary category...

Ryan... What's the difference between the free listing and the $30.00 one... do I need to buy to get the benefit?

TY for asking this Mark. :) I have had a free listing, but was wondering if I should pay the $30 a year.

Pay it - if it works it's very cheap internet advertising.

Just an update, I did decide to use Universal Business Listing for a friends website about 25 days ago. It has definately made a difference. Keeping in mind that I know very little and am helping someone who knows less lol I guess that's well worth $30! :scooter:

Measurable?

Thanks for sharing Lorrie - it may also be helpful to know in measurable metrics how listing with UBL made a difference: site traffic increase? measurable increase in conversions? consistency of local listing data across providers?

That may give others a bit more insight into what to expect if they decide to list as well.

Local listings now showing up. I used a very specific word so that I could tell which ones were from UBL alone. It's working. I hope to have the new website up this week - so the whole thing should be available soon. Not a floral concern, but lessons learned, LOL
