Has anybody ever tried this? Just taking the craft sand and wetting it and placing flower stems directly into the wet sand?

One of my employees brought me in a flower "sundae" for my birthday and she put red sand in a glass and wet it. Then she placed the flowers directly into the sand and used that as her foam, so to speak.

It lasted THREE weeks and I never re-wet the sand!

I thought it might harm the flowers, having them directly in the sand but it worked!

I did that last summer for centerpieces for a beach theme wedding. Cylinders with white sand, then shells, and then turquoise water beads. Blue orchids, lasted 6 weeks. I thought it was just because of the orchids, but maybe the sand has something to do with it.

On the other hand, I still have my "control" dozen red roses, they came in Feb. 7.

Back in the olden days, we did lots of fresh cemetery arrangments (mostly glads) in mache containers for Memorial Day. We used only sand and water at that time because it seemed to be the only way to weight them down so the wind wouldn't tip them over. So, I guess sand should be find in our day, too.

Like Carol said, Using sand is an old-timer's trick. However, you should used packaged/screened commercial sand ( like craft sand ) and not out of the yard or dirt pile sand. You do have to be careful with how much water to sand you use, so that there is good water for the flowers, but not so much that you have mud.
