Walmart selling caskets & urns

Why does this not surprise me????

A father came by the shop one time to pick up loose flowers so that his sister could make a casket spray for his son who'd been killed in an auto accident. During the conversation, he revealed that the casket was in the back of his (father's) pick up which was parked outside my shop. I cannot remember if he had his son's body with him or if he was taking the casket to the mortuary. Surely the latter....

The article I saw today actually said delivery in 3 days... so you just ask the FD to keep them cool till the buggy arrives! Federal law prevents refusal of FD to use third party items (I think it said 3rd party?)

Costco has been doing this for a long time already on their website. There are also websites online that will ship overnight to any funeral home in the U.S. And yes, it is legal to do this and the funeral home has to accept them.

www.bestpricecaskets.com ships overnight.....

Makes me feel a tiny bit of justice in light of the funeral homes now selling flowers on their websites through a WS or an in-house florist. So smack me....I can take it.

There is often confusion about funeral homes having to accept caskets ordered from a third party. Yes, they have to accept but ONLY after the person has died and the family has made arrangements with that funeral home. They do not have to store the casket or accept it for a family who is not using their services. My husband is a funeral director and has had to deal with these issues before. You can't just order a casket and send it to a funeral home if you haven't made the arrangements with them first.

Florists aren't the only ones that have to contend with this. Now funeral homes have to contend with the people who think any one can DIY. I was at my hairdresser's the other day thumbing through their free magazine and saw an ad for a name brand shampoo. It read something like this...when you buy this same shampoo from a chain store instead of your salon it could be contaminated or not really made by the manufacturer! I remember thinking at the time that everyone has to put up with this. ALL speciality businesses are having their profits reduced not just florists!

You know al i can say is they get what they pay for.......how sad!!

just leave "instructions" when delivery arrives, "if not at home, please leave on front porch"

WallFart

Do they at least have the decency to donate a casket to the dead employees whom they took out life insurance policies on? You know, the part time cake decorator who they made a cool million on when she died of cancer. They kept all the life insurance money and gave nothing to her struggling family. Her husband worked at WallFart too. Wallfart can suck rocks in hell. Feel free to substitute the R in Rock for a more appropriate letter.

Lisa, (my BP and starter of this thread) spoke with our funeral director yesterday about this issue. This is what we found out:

1. Their caskets start at $500 not $900 like on the Walmart website. Which means people "perceive" that they are getting a deal which is not the case.

2. MOST IMPORTANTLY....he says not everyone fits in the same size casket. Regular ones only have a 29 inch across area for the body (I think he said 29") which means if you order grandma a casket from Walmart and she doesn't fit, you are #*@& out of luck. Remember the sites says once shipped, twice shy baby. LOL just kidding...it says no returns.

He also said that next year our state will require anyone selling caskets and vaults have to register with the Attorney General's office. Woops! We shall see if Walmart wants to deal with all that.

Also spoke to my local funeral director and he tells me that these come in fedex truck. He is hoping that they have a way to handle and unload these from the truck, as he does not. The companies he currently uses have codes to get in his funeral home and leave the caskets inside. They handle unloading and unpackaging for him. Since he is a one man operation, he is not always there and they may end up left outside or not delivered in some cases. He also said that the "no returns" will bite quite a few people because they don't disclose "fit" information. He also says that he gets better quality and has caskets starting much cheaper than Walmart.

The public will live and learn on this one as they are learning on the WS and order gatherers.
