My brother, Chris Drummond attended the PFDA annual convention (Penn. Funeral Directors Assoc.) with Greg Royer on behalf of the PFIA a couple weeks ago.... SAF wrote a nice article and added at the end some things florists can try to help strengthen florists relationships with funeral directors and hopefully educate them about in "in lieu of flowers" phrase.
Funeral Directors, Florists in Pa. Take Relationship Public
Instead of telling their local funeral directors that they’re there for them, some proactive Pennsylvania florists are showing them just how ready and able they are to help.
Florists from the Pennsylvania Floral Industry Association
(PFIA) set up a booth, displayed sympathy flowers and answered questions at the annual convention of the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association. Their participation in the mid-June event is part of an ongoing effort to forge a stronger relationship between the two groups at the local level and the prototype of the kind of outreach SAF emphasizes in its sympathy campaigns.
“Flowers are a vital part of a funeral or memorial service and we want to reate better relationships so we can foster a better experience all around,” said Drummond, co-owner of Plaza Flowers in Philadelphia.
At the booth, florists Chris Drummond, AAF, and Greg Royer were able to add some strong visuals to the case for flowers in funeral services and explain how the two business partners can work together.
“It is always good for us to meet people in other industries we work with,” said Greg Royer of Royer’s Flowers and Gifts in Lebanon, and PFIA president. “Sharing trends in the floral and funeral industries helps everyone to keep current,” he said.
In November, PFIA ran a full-page color ad in the October edition of the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association's newsletter, The Reporter.
The ad used content from the open letter SAF penned to funeral directors in the full-page color ad it’s running in The Director, the magazine of the National Funeral Directors Association. The ad, a joint effort between SAF and Ascoflores, emphasizes the important role sympathy flowers play at memorial services and the value of working with a local florist.
Try this:
Show up. Even if your state’s funeral directors don’t have an annual
convention, you can organize an open house with funeral homes in the area.
Reach out to local funeral directors and ask them to stop using the "in lieu of" phrase.
SAF provides a suggested letter with its full-color ad and helpful
advice and supporting materials to get the conversation started and keep it going.
