Just an addendum, I attribute those "I'm looking at your website and would like to order blah blah blah" as if they came directly from our site and off our printer ...

The same for me.
My website not only brings me direct orders, but is a tool we use many, many times a day. Certainly use it more than the ws directories.
I dropped my Teleflora site last week. Had it as a link from my site. I was afraid that I didn't have enough selections to choose.
Now, I probably have too many.
Clients seem to like the choices.
I would realistically think that about 25 percent comes from the site.
60-70 percent of NEW business
As I am writing this, I am realizing that I need a clear cut way to track this. Thanks for the insight.

Don't think it hasn't crossed my mind. We've given serious consideration to a pricing model that is commission-based rather than flat fee. The biggest detractor is that we don't want to be guilty by association with other companies that use commissions or per order fees.

In this case, you've suggested the option. However, for a lot of people this is as bas as WS, and I never want to be the subject of that discussion. It's very easy for people to spin or create lies when you start down that path.

Not saying "no" and not saying "yes" at this point :)

Ryan,
How'd you like to paid a percentage of gross orders I get from a Florist 2.0 web site? So if I get an additional $30,000 in orders annually you get $3000? I'm game if you are.

Now....I'm game too...

How 'bout...RealFlorist.com Ryan...we'll make it an international OG site ;)

Oops! I may have voted incorrectly. The percentage of website orders which actually print out on our printer would be close to the 5%, which was my vote. If, however, we count the ones who say, "I'm on your website.....," the percentage would be closer to 25%

Ditto for what Tracy said. My site is currently hosted by Media99. I pay $1.75 for each order placed on the website, no matter the dollar value. My monthly hosting fee is $35.00. Media99 has hosted my site for many years, and I am thrilled with their excellent service. I'm sure Ryan is top notch in servicing his web clients. If I had been on FlowerChat prior to signing up with Media99, I would have asked Ryan to host my site. For now, I am happy with Media99 and I tend to be loyal to providers who take care of me. I think your web host should draw traffic to your site, and I don't think I should have to pay 10% commission for them to provide this service. Geez! When will it all end? If I pay you for your service, the last thing I expect you to do is charge me commission for providing that service!

Yesterday was the first time that our web site equaled more then 30 percent of our sales. and that is based on strictly the sales that came street into our computer and does not include customers who call us while looking at our web site and then place order over the phone. As time move forward I expect that this will be the norm for us.

A couple questions for clarification:
1) Your web host should draw traffic to your site?
How's that? They are essentially your cyber-landlord. If they designed the site they are also your decorator. You don't expect your landlord or decorator to do your marketing, too, right? Not unless you pay them for that service as well.

2) If I pay you for your service, the last thing I expect you to do is charge me commission for providing that service?
a) Isn't that what you're doing with a per order fee from Media99?
b) What was proposed was a commission instead of flat-rate payment. Are you opposed to that scenario as well?

As I said, I'm just trying to clarify my understanding of your opinion. I want to know what you think :)

Ryan,
I, like NavyBrat, are hosted by Media 99.

The per order fee decreases as the # of order generated increases.

The hosting fee of $35/me is most reasonable, and it was explained to me that the $$ fee per order allows them to spread development costs out over a longer period of time. I was very ok with that, and It did not mean a huge outlay of cash for me in the beginning....

since I came from a TF hosted site, to Media99, the Increase in orders was immediate,,,,,and at a much lower cost.

Their response to me, any time I have a question, or have something truly stupid happen, or need help in any way is AWESOME!!!!

Regards,

Cheryl

Thanks, Cheryl. I have met the folks at Media99 and they are exceptionally nice people.

However, your answer didn't address my questions to NavyBrat about her mindset. I'm interested to know her thoughts.

Hey Ryan,

Just wanted to leave a quick message...I will reply after Mother's Day. I have absolutely no business being on FC this evening...you could wipe the floor with me. We have 250 prom pick ups for tomorrow and Mother's Day orders piled up after we kick the prom out. We are ready...mentally, I'm challenged. Just want you to know I meant no disrespect to you. Will respond when I have my wits about me. Best to all for a successful Mother's Day!

No disrespect inferred, don't worry.

I just like to know what's on the minds of florists. After M-Day, you can give me your thoughts. Now, go rest :)
