Ok, FCers, I'm going to pic your brains.

I have been asked to give a presentation on websites to a group of florists at the end of May. To help prepare for this, here is what I want to know from you:

What do you want to know?

Some ideas I've had are Web site planning 101, Web marketing, SEO ... but I want to be sure I hit on topics where the need is greatest. I only have 20 minutes to fill :)

WebSite Admin Section

I would be interested in knowing how to navigate the Admin section!

Can I assign categories? How to enter products or items? Can I aassign products or items to different catagories? How to upload photo's? Can I add Holiday categories? Can I add pages via the admin section? Can I track visitor statistics? Can you maintain & update if I am unable? Cost of tech support?

Start up costs? Monthly cost?

These are just a few questions to begin with!

Hope this helps!

Ryan, I would start with the basics: Do you design your own or use a company. What kind of costs are involved, credit card clearing, storefront, etc.

Then you could get into the different parts of a site, what makes a good site, integration of orders with your pos system, common mistakes, and maybe wrap it up with a little seo and marketing opportunities.

Surprisingly, a lot of florists really don't know much about websites (although that is changing rapidly)

Basics

Ryan:
You might want to start with some facts:
How many people have computers; how many shoppers use the web to shop today, as compared to say, 5 years ago. Where the web shopping, internet search stuff is going. Then, why they should have a website!!

The difference between a full e-commerce site, and a just "look see" call me, informational site. What a home page is, what are popular categories for shopping on florists sites. How often a site should be changed, etc.

How to use the site to improve customer interaction -- ie: email campaigns, reminder messages, tie-in to POS systems (or not) and so on.

what is the avg age of your audience? If they are long-in-the-business florists, they may or may not have much knowledge of websites -- or may be hooked into 1 of the wire service sites. Explain how to create a domain name, and if one exists, how the move it to an independent host.

I know this is a lot to cover in 20 minutes.....maybe some handouts??

Hope this helps!

So far, this is great advice! Seems to be in line with what I was thinking - which helps, 'cause I was afraid I might be off-base :)

A thought from the UK side. When you do your talk say to them to remember that a shop web site is like a shop window. It needs to be changed and kept up to date.
It is the first impression your customer will get of your shop from where ever in the world he/she is.
I say this because last year one of our local florist shops still had Valentines roses with prices on a site at the end of April. Last week I found one that has Valentines & UK Mothersday still on their site.
