We're doing 36" tall vases (somewhat bottom heavy) with loomey dish arrangements on the top. The arrangements will sit on top of pub tables and be roughly 7ft in the air. I'm worried about tippage.
I don't want to put water or marbles in the vase, if it does get tipped over those items on the tile floor would be very dangerous. Is there some formula that says if your arrangment is this weight, your base shouldn't be more than this height?
Or what other ideas are their for weighing these pieces down?

The only thing about sand is it will scratch glass. I don't know what your colors are or your budget, but fruit would work also.

Is beach sand different than regular sand? Does it come in colors?

Love the fruit idea, colors won't work. It's wine, fushia, purple, yellow and green...and the colors have to be perfectly balanced.

Is there such a thing as vases that are extra heavy on the bottom to use for such arrangements?

we place a flat round mirror 8''-10''- or12'' on the table really helps with stability if the table is not perfectly flat -- and then use floral "cling" adhesive to attach the vase to the mirror. if the cling shows, then stick a piece of greens - like plumosus to disguise it
the vase and the mirror are rental items
try it ! there shoudn't be any need for weights

I did the mirror as the base only I glued it with an adhesive that holds glass. It is permanent. This was one of those cheap twisty eiffel tower vases that the bride insisted on using. I wasn't comfortable with putting a large arrangement on it so I created a flat base with the mirror so that it was virtually impossible to fall over.

(As an added FYI, the glue took two whole days to dry so make sure this is done ahead of time.)

glue dots

how about sticking the vase to the mirror with glue dots?
we use them to stick an arrangement in a lomey dish to the top of a vase . they are clear and don't show

what is the shape of the vase???
Base is 8" across, the vase starts 3" wide and flutes outward as it moves up 36" tall with an opening of 10".

I've heard others talk about glue dots, where do you find them?

What Vasestuffer said works well....vase clinged to mirror, lomey clinged to top of tower.

Another way would be to actually use the vase....as a vase!!

Use dendrob orchids, in fuchia, and do a "spray"effect out the top of the vase with bear grass or lily grass, and maybe curly willow. Depends on the size of the vase.

If your vases are the skinny towers, I would suggest only using a 6" lomey on top. anything else will topple due to unbalanced nature of the beast.

there are also now available a bowl with a knob on the bottom that fits into the top of the skinny tower vases (the ones with a 1 1/2" opening). this may help you with your arrangement. You would want to try your arrangement first, and also still cling the bowl to the top of the tower vase.

Hope this helps!

Holly,

I know this is slightly off topic, but are you using actual lomey dishes? Syndicate Sales makes a 6" clear design dish that actually has a slight lip aroung the bottom edge (the sides are perpendicular rather than sloped). They fit perfectly. I get them from Vans...they have them all the time. The clear is great because you almost don't see it. We also use a 1/2 block of foam. I use the same pilsner type vases all the time and have never had a problem with tipping, even with table pads. Last time I filled the vases with water, I gracefully dropped the vase breaking it and spilling a ton of water all over the marble dance floor and The Odyssey...can you say CLASSY!!!!!

They're Loomey's and they do fit pretty well. Thanks for the "pilsner" I be darned if I could think of the word. I do think the vase is pretty heavy and stable, but just worry that someone could bump the table and send the whole thing toppling over. Am I worrying too much?

marble floor...broken glass...gallon of water...life of a florist..."priceless"!

Very nice work Brad, I love the way you have used the hypericum berries. It's a different twist, just might try it on something coming up next weekend.

Holly -

For the tall pilsners, we use a Lomey set-up with a 9" clear dish, adapter glued to the bottom and Lucite pole that extends down into the vase. A second Lomey, placed directly atop the first, is filled with the flowers. This way, the bride can easily take the arrangements.

The clear Lomey tube contains needlepoint ivy with small florets of coordinated flower (we pull them through with a long wire). Once submerged in a water-filled vase, they look larger, but not too large to distract conversation.

We use the 32" Lomey tubes and then cut them to the appropriate length. The weight of the water in the vase really helps stabilize it.

The set-up also works well in spaghetti jar vases with 6" dishes at the top instead of 9".
