I have been doing some research on my website..I try to keep up with the stats offered but I don't always know what it means which doesn't help too much...

I was looking to day at my stats for unique visitors...I was running about 1200-1900 a month until june. All of a sudden my numbers jumped to 4300-6900 a month...I know this is great as if my visitors to the store jumped up suddenly, I am getting more orders on the web and a lot more calls originating from my website, but why all of a sudden the jump in visitors...

The majority of them come from searchlive.com and google...I really think if I keep working on my site I can capture a whole lot more business..it just is a slow slow process and you need a whole lot of quiet time to accomplish it...it is so different than hand designing displays in the store...i can do that a few minutes here and there in between customers and orders, but web site stuff needs so much more thought, prep and sit down time...

Lori,

What stats program are you using? That's a key item to know.

Also, do your stats show the search terms people are using to find you?

What's your bounce rate?

For this I was using the tf stats...I did not look at that as i overwhelmed myself with too many numbers, but my bounce rate is high as always has been...The very reason I am working very hard on my site...I am very busy taking pics and writing desriptions and pricing stuff...

I remembered hearing somewhere in a marketing class, that if people walk in your store look around and leave that something is not right I am assuming the same holds true with websites...

I am just wondering why the sudden influx of visitors...I did get a bunch more views from FC when asking about my website, but it was like 20 no where near the jump in visits...

I can check things on the google webmasters tools and have found many good things there, but there is a learning curve and I just got reffered there recently and don't know what to do with so much of the info given...OH boy what learning I have to do... my head hurts, I feel like I have gone back to college, good thing my social life is kinda slow right now...

All of a sudden? Could be hits from google images. This has happened to us a few times. A tell-tale sign is that traffic comes from all over the world. Alternatively, some high traffic blog might have linked to one of your images. We get about ~200 traffic every month from someone's blog in Iran. Can't read it because it's in Arabic. He (she) linked to one of our images and everytime someone reads her blog, it loads our image.

The reason I asked about the stats package is that it makes a difference if it's JavaScript based or log file based. Log file analyzers will record different numbers than JS scripts as JS stats programs only track real visitors, not hits to images only, and search bot traffic.

A sudden spike like that with a log file stats program likely means some bots had a party on your site for a while.

Hmm.... didn't TF ban the Googlebot a few years ago because it was "overloading their servers?"

I did get a couple of hits from googlebot under the referral section, but not hundreds..

If you want to email me the login info, I can have a look at your stats and try to decipher for you :)
