Had a call yesterday from a shop wanting to know if I deliver to a town 80 miles away. Today had one that was 40 miles away. I said they have a shop in that town and she said do you know the name of it? I ask her if she ever thoughts of getting online and finding a shop that way and she said no I only go thru Teleflora and it's getting harder and harder to do.
But then I had three shops a couple of weeks ago in TX that said they don't do orders with other shops. I said why not and the one gal don't have and don't want to.
And we wonder why the floral industry is going down the toilet ????

I think that some of the florists that are just plain old refusing to do any business with any florists are just burnt on all the info and just tired of trying to figure out if they are real florists or ogs...they have enough of their own business and just don't want to deal with the possibilites of stupidity that abounds out there...I get calls all the time from real flosrist with unreasonable requests and wants, didin't get any delivery, made rediculous promises...I have been prompted on many calls to ask the florists if they get delivery on their orders, if so why not one you want me to fill and on redicuolus requests I will ask would you promise this in your own store, always say that depends, well why the heck would you promise it for my store when you don't know my situation...

"Only" going through a wire service is the problem. And as to shops not wanting to deal with other florists, I understand... they're tired of working and not getting paid full value...

I don't think the industry is going in the toilet either, in fact I think in many areas we have turned the corner and things are getting better. The thing is, like Doug said yesterday we have to adapt... many are adapting to life without wire services and taking discounted work which is counter productive to long term profitability. I have been known to tell other shops, to give their customer my phone number or send it to the wire service shop in town. For some reason they don't want to send them there.

I no longer give a 20% "commission" to other florists, I mean why would you when you don't to your own cash customers? Any florist taking an order for another city, collects a "$ervice fee", they should be happy with that, or stop being a middleman....

We had 2 wire outs this week, the week we are officially TF free and we paid full value to the filling florist. I agree, I do not want my customer to be upset when the flowers show up on the other end. We do charge a service fee but we find the florist and use our shop debit card to process the transaction. I did feel flattered today when a shop decided to pay with a credit card to have us fill their order instead of calling one of the remaining TF shops in town :) Even had to go to a 2nd payment method (we do not have Amex at this time). She had to use her personal credit card just to order the flowers, I guess she must really like us :)

I think maybe some florists are just too much in a hurry to do proper research when ordering with another florist. I always google the city and also check out a few websites before deciding on who to call. I try to get customers to go direct if they have a computer but if they don't I help them out.
I get a lot of calls for Vancouver or other cities on Vancouver Island. I think people just don't realize that although Victoria is on Vancouver Island our island is almost the size of the United Kingdom. It is 280 miles from tip to tip. Vancouver is on the mainland a 90 minute ferry ride away and yet people are shocked when I say we don't deliver there. The ferry cost with a car (not even a truck) is over $120 return. It's supposed to be part of the Trans Canada Highway but that is just a joke.
Anyway it would save time in the long run to just spend the few minutes to make sure the florist is in the right city.

I have shops call and say your only one number off their zipcode are you close to them? They don't understand that in rural areas the zipcodes are by the name of the town.
I also look up the town or city and see what is in that town.
