I have a wedding and reception and the bride wants boxes of wheat grass. Problem is can't seem to find wheat grass in anything smaller than 50 lbs. Any suggestions, will regular grass seeds work? Need some help on this one. How long will it take for the grass to grow to about 3 inches? I know some of you have done these before and I need some advise.
Thanks for any info.

We needed some seed for a wedding last Saturday. I spent hours trying to find the seeds locally. Finally, I went to Ebay and using search term"wheat grass", there were many offerings. I bought 2 pounds for $10 delivery included. Then, it was on to experimenting. There is alot of good information on the internet about how to do this. The first one We made looked great. Unfortunately, when We started the batch for the wedding centerpieces (7 I think), this time the results were not as good as the first time. They were okay, but not as tall and thick as the experimental one was. Anyway, the bride loved them.

Since then, I ran across some information that they may be available at a health food store that sells bulk grain, rice etc. I think that there was even a youtube video about wheat grass.

Hope this helps.

It won't take long to get to be 3 inches. Maybe 4-5 days after germination

Before all this, I tried annual ryegrass. The wheat grass makes a much better showing.

look in a pet store . its called cat grass . grows very fast
The chain of craft stores I used to work for sold millet seed, same stuff. They bought it at a nursery or home improvement store in a big bag. Plant it and you'll have 3" of grass in less than 2 weeks.

I use that 'Patch Perfect' brand that you see advertised. It germinates fast, looks great, and holds up well.

I don't know exactly how you plan to use them, but, I have shaped oasis into the container I wanted to use and just sprinkled seeds on top and wet the oasis. It was beautiful grass in just a few days....but, check out the timing.

The oasis lets you have the ability to add props or flowers, etc to the field of grass.

Carol's technique is the same that I do........cut your oasis to fit.........plant the seed......and let grow. I used to use plain grass seed......till I discovered that brand that you see advertised "Patch Perfect" - That stuff works great.....Faster germination and results than any other method I have done. The grass flats look so lush.......I get raves each time I do that for an event. Next time I use the stuff, I will have to snap off some photos for you to see.

I grew up on a farm, and am constantly amazed at the prices paid for various forms of "cat grass"
I go to the local farmer's co-op and purchase oat seed. I think I paid 5$ for 25 pounds. I've had it in the basement for years.
We plant it, either in soil or on oasis, if we want a particular shape, and it usually takes 2 or 3 days to germinate, then another 6 days or so to get to 3" tall. Cost per 6" pot is pennies...like 3 pennies. The biggest cost is for the soil and the pot, or if using oasis, then it's lots more expensive, although it can result in cool shapes with oasis. The most important thing is to keep it damp at all times, and to water it gently, so you don't swamp the seeds with a direct water spout. Good luck!
