Tonight on our news I saw Bennett Wholesale Florist in Bangor burned flat to the ground within minutes of the alarm. Staff had left at 3:30 (with an order sent to me, phew) and no one was in the building. The alarm was reported around 4:15 and within minutes the metal structure's roof had caved in and the sides had buckled.
I was just there yesterday and they were preparing for their annual open house next Saturday and the place was full with Christmas poly, twig wreaths, full stock of spray paints, ribbons and silks. This is a devastating blow to a great many northern Maine florists as they are the only wholesaler to service above Millinocket where I am. Having lost a wholesaler to closing from financial problems already in the past month, this puts a very big loss on Maine florists. There are debates as to whether the owner will rebuild or reopen. It would be devastating to a great many small town florists. Also, this wholesale house was the place where all our classes for our PCF and mmfd are held. They are the most accomodating staff and a treat for Maine State Florists Association to be able to have classes in their building.

Oh, that is so awful Rhonda. I just talked with Robbie 3 days ago and he shipped me some Dixon pins. This is a terrible blow as you say. I am grateful no one was there at the time.

Bennett Wholesale has hosted many Teleflora unit functions as well, always gracious and helpful.

I'm in total shock.

How terrible! This loss effects many aspects of business beyond simply product.

What a horriffic event!

The Bennett's have alway been very supportive of the floral industry in Maine - very nice people.

Devastating to the family business, it breaks my heart to imagine the carnage - they had a huge supply department, and were well into the swing of Christmas.

What a terrible loss.

Oh my, it seems rampant lately - fire, flood, damage ....
thoughts to the Bennett family and employees, and all the shops affected by the loss.

UPDATE: Great News!

Flower shipments were received today, refrigerated trucks have been brought in. Phone is transferred although on answering machine as of now. All standing orders were filled, put on trucks for delivery! Office trailer is being negotiated for first of the week delivery. Up and running except hard goods... Great news, great to hear!!

Indeed it is great news, Rhonda. Thank you for the emailed updates this morning, much appreciated.

Kudos to the Bennett Wholsale family, for striving to fulfill
commitments in the midst of their tragedy.
