Don't get me wrong I love kids, but Why do parents ask their kids which flower to buy? !

here is an example of a situation I get all the time:

mom says to kid, "oh, honey, what flower should we buy?"

the kid points to the red one, and then mom says,
"oh dear, are you sure you want red?" What about Pink?"

kid says, "NO! I want the red one!"
mom says, "oh no, red won't match her house, lets just get the pink one"

The mom never agrees with the kid so, why do they even bother asking?! LOL!

The kid ends up leaving store crying because mom picked the pink rose instead of red one :(

This happens all the time in the store...
it can be annoying at times...if you are going to let the kid pick it, well then take the one they pick, or don't ask their opinion.

I've had parents (usually fathers) buy the more expensive arrangement because the child chose that one. Potential step-fathers are the most anxious to please the child!

That being said, we often experience the situation you described where the parent opts for a color other than the child's choice. Then, I make sure the child leaves with a flower of their favorite color. We give old carns or a single mini-carnation to well behaved (i.e. those who aren't pulling things off the shelves) children. Parents are always impressed by this little extra.

You should make that work for you. Put a tiny toy in the $200 tropical arrangement.

Great question and one of my pet peeves. I've had kids have melt-downs with Dad threatening to leave the store with nothing. This, while I am making the 2 separte dozen pink rose arrangements for them. They end up buying both but jeez what a fiasco! I think parents maybe do this subconciously to torture florists. And it works.

Because they don't know how to parent....

never ever give a kid and open ended choice...it doesn't teach them anything about choosing and makes your life a living hell...

I had a no choice Mother and as a result have a hard time making difficult choices as an adult....My nephew has a choice mother and makes choices I never though a child could be concious of making....She did a real good job from the time he was able to choose things at giving him 2 choices so he could make his own decisions...My SIL is als a choice mother, but an open ended choice mother, she has a child that makes all kind of demands and choices and now the mom has no say in the matter because she created it...

I say, let your toddlers select your clothing as well. Think of all the big pirates and giant faries we would have walking around. :jester

Hey that would be great, I would love to have a kid and have them select a big fairy costume for my hubby to wear....I would be willing to waer and eyepatch, aarrrgh!!!

Parents often think it's great to have the child choose. However the idiot parent vetos the choice. Stupid.

Anyway, here's a thought. Have a Kids Only selection bucket. No parents allowed. :)

It's a win win to my way of thinking. The child exercises their right to choose according to what they like, and the parent can pick from the "adult" selections without angst.

I used to keep a bucket of daisies and carns for kids. It worked.

I do this with my nephew, when he wants to make an arrangement he knows where "his" flowers and containers are....he feels great about making his own decisions and I don't have to worry that he wants to chop into a 12.00 hydrangea stem...

We always have a small budvase on the front counter with a couple of carns. Every child that comes into the store gets a flower. That child should have been given a red carnation to take home. The parent in this instance is just asking for trouble. Why bother asking an opinion when you already have your mind made up?

People (parents) need to forget about matching the colour to the house. The colour of the flower needs to match the spirit of the giver... child or adult, it matters not.

I love this tactic, too.

But, I find that customers are always doing the same thing to me. They ask my opinion and when I give it, they say, "that is not at all what I want", so, why ask me. They also do this to whoever they brought to the shop with them to help them pick out flowers and say the same thing to them.....so, why ask them?

I find this is a very common issue.

I can get really annoyed in these kind of situations and kids do tend to go straight to the red roses which can throw off a composition real fast. They get their snotty little fingers all over the fridge doors and when I turn my back it seems like 7/10 kids will press their faces onto the glass , ive seen more than a handful lick it....
I'm definitely annoyed with the parents, kids will be munchkins.
